إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ

We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).

Q 15:9

A POEM REGARDING ZAID BIN THAABIT

Thousands of the Qurra were dying.

Whether set up, ambushed or killed, they never stopped trying.

They were the most learned in Quran – and they knew why they were there

On the plains of Jihad they fought - till their arms were laid bare

The warrior Ameer from amongst them realized a grave situation:

If the Quran is lost – then upon man will be great destruction

If the Quran is lost – then upon the earth will be great tribulation

He petitioned his friend the Caliph – to do something fast

We had to make sure – that the Quran would last

We had to make sure – that Islam would grow fast

So they spoke at length about what they could do

About an impending development that would have to be true

About a plan of action that could not simply “do”

When both were reconciled to one another, a young man was brought forward

He was upright and righteous – not known as a coward

Move the mountain they told him and he sighed.

“Easy as pie” he replied.

Put the Quran together – make it something compiled.

It was a Bid’ah he protested, and thus, something reviled.

Abu Bakr and Umar were put to the test.

“Give your evidences” Zayd said, “Give your Best”

Indeed when Allah revealed that the Quran would be guarded, how many of us thought of Zayd?

The immeasurable impact he has made?

He was put in charge of a group of men

Masters and scholars – who were taught by the pen.

He was appointed as a witness – to bring forth the verses
Sat in front of the Prophets Masjid – bringing together the cursives

That which was written, on parchment and bone

That which they had on them, and what they left at home

Near the end of all of this, here is what Abu Bakr had to note: Let it be a lesson – a map for us to tote:

You are young and intelligent – a reputation beyond reproach

You’ve done this before - experience upon which none can encroach

You’ve mastered the subject even though you’ve yet to marry

Stepped up to the plate – not a second you’ve tarried

When the Rasul (SAWS) left his hometown – Zayd was only eleven

Who would have thought a boy of such age – would be going straight to heaven?

When Allah deemed that the time of the Beloved (SAWS) was done

Our master Zayd was only twenty one!

In the finality of this verse, pay careful attention and try to see

When he was used to compile the Quran for the first time,

Zayd was only twenty three!
