assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
i had a question about the paper due this weekend. is the paper supposed to just be a summary of the presentation, with the salient points, basically just explaining the answer with daleel, straight to the point
or is it supposed to be more thorough and comprehensive, like the presentation is, including all the ABCDEFG elements?
i thought it was the later, a more detailed paper, but i dont see how to include all the info from a 10 mins presentation into a 500 words paper?

sayyid sabiq's book fiqh us sunnah is a great reference. not just for the presentation and the stuff about zakah, but it can really help insha Allah for when we study sawm and hajj too insha Allah
you can find it in the concordia msa library, or online
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/law/fiqhussunnah/
also in concordia msa library, you can find dr yusuf qaradawi's book, fiqh az zakah, that the ustaadh mentioned in class, and an nawawi's manual on shafi fiqh, al maqasid
there are alot more books in the library about zakah, as well as some audio tapes too if anyone is interested. you can search online and check the website to see their opening hours reflections.concordia.ca

Assalamoalaikoum,
=> Does anyone know if the MSA library key problem has been solved?
Security said she could not open the library because the key had not been returned for more than two weeks. We'll jsut have to use online sources then, unless br.Amir has solved the issue before friday.
=> Sadie, I think it's the latter as well. Your essay is basically your presentation, which has to be 5-10 mins (there's a huge gap between 5-10 mins though.) However, I think the Shaikh miscalculated how long 5-10 mins is on paper, it's not 500 words. Unless you use a font with size 18.
Actually now that I think about it, did he say it was 500 words, and then he estimated that it would be 5-10 mins? Or did he say it was 5-10 mins, and then estimated it would 500 words?
=> Who is evaluating these presentation? I think he said that we would just do our orals infront of our group, so do we get an automatic 10% because we say our presentations? Or will there be differing grades based not on the oral part, but the written part?

I was the one that suggested it would be a 5 to 600 word paper, It could be as much as 750 actually. It is a presentation. You do not fill all 10 minutes with words. You might have a diagram or pictures, you might have contribution from the audience. If you follow the ABCDEFG and have three points or examples from each you will round out the presentation just fine. Quality beats out quantity. What I meant by suggesting 500 words was that it is not a thesis paper. Those who have time to put more into it will and those who do not can use the bare skelleton of the ABCDEFG to make a simple but poignant presentation. Do not be limited by the word limit suggestion. AstagfiruAllah.
What you submit in the paper is exactly what you will present. Just the same as when you attend a conference and give a lecture, you back it up with your paper on the the subject. The paper will have all the research references you can skip out on during your presentation.
(This has been 172 words...)

In sha Allah this will help. It is from the Ustad Muhammad from the thread

Bismillah.
Here are some things to keep in mind about the speech. Please pass it on to your fellow classmates.
1. The speech will only be 10 minutes.
2. You will be presenting only to your group of 6
3. It will be conducted sometime on Saturday, in sha Allah.
4. Prepare BEFORE class, do not procrastinate this. If you leave the speech till Friday night, you will not sleep properly and thus mess up your study habit on Saturday and Sunday.
5. Some things to try to include in your speech:
Qur'an
Hadith
Statements of the Comanions
Statements of the scholars
Something in point form (1..2..)
An analogy
A folktale
Poetry lines
Statistics of some sort
Story
Personal experience story
a non-Muslim quote
etc.

Assaalamu'Alykum,
From what I remember the speeches will be to your group. The thing that will be for ten marks is the actual paper you hand in. Which will be judged by the ustaadh.

Mashallah we heard som amazing speeches today. It looks like the newsletter is almost ready to roll out! We have some excellent articles exploring the topic of zakah on jewelery, the difference between taxes and zakah, debt in Islam and if zakah can be paid to an Islamic school. We have to hand our talk in for marks so perhaps the ustadh or the markers can pick out the best or a selection of best views and there in is a reward of recognition for great work. It would be neat to publish an outstanding paper say, in the Muslim Link or other Islamic publication?
