Alsalamu Alikum,

We learned in Usool Al-Fiqh that the commandment of Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alihi Wasallam) is fard. That is unless there is a clue that lowers it from fard to mustahab. That is Rule three under how Mustahab actions are recognized. I'm a little confused on these clues. Is the follwing hadith an example of a clue that makes the commandment mustahab?

And he said: “Trim the moustache and let the beard grow; be different from the Magians.” Narrated by Muslim, 260.

wa 'Alaikum Assalaamu wa Rahmatullaah

How is it going ya akhee Hany?

What part of the hadith are you referring to that would give you a clue that it is mustahabb?

And Allaah knows best, that hadith (alone) would show that it is waajib/fard. The reason being is that it is a set of commandments and nothing actually commenting on the other. Maybe the last quote "be different..." you are referring to; but the end would only give a clue as to what the Magians used to do at the time: let their mustaches grow long and shave their beards.

Were one to say it were mustahabb, he would have to have an additional proof like, hypothetically, a hadith saying "the Prophet used to trim his beard's length and its width".

Many times the lowering of a fard to a mustahabb is due to another hadith explaining it.

An example of this, but in one hadith can be found on Saheeh alBukhaari (1183) in which in which the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Pray before Maghrib,” and the third time he said: “for whoever wants to”.

The phrase “for whoever wants to” shows that the command in the words “Pray before Maghrib” does not mean that it is obligatory.

And Allaah knows best.

Dear brothers,
Assalamualaikkum,

What is the ruling of dyeing grey hair with henna as per the following haidths ??
Is it permisible, sunnah or fard/wajib??Do some of the hadiths comes in a way of command??

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Change grey hairs and do not be like the Jews.” Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 4986; al-Tirmidhi, 1674.

It was narrated by Muslim (3924) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw grey hair on the head of Abu Bakr’s father, he said: “Change this with something.” According to al-Bukhaari (5448) he said: “The Jews do not dye their hair, so be different from them.”

There is no clue in 'just' that hadith to lower it to Mustahab. It's a clear cut commandment, so default would be that it's fard (if there we no other texts that spoke about the issue).
