Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Is it permissible to file a tax return for money given as zakat, with the intention to donate it all back to charity again once received

Living in North America, if ones pays zakaah to islamic organizations, they will return a receipt to you that you can claim on your income tax return and get a refund from the government. If the islamic organization gets the full amount one paid as zakaah and loses nothing as a result of the tax difference then, the zakaah is paid and one may use the money from the tax refund for personal expenditures. Jazakillahu khayra. Did we learn something else in class?

We learned that a person should not benefit from their zakah. this is what I learned according to the shafi'ee opinion.
Dr.Kahf however knows his stuff a thousand times more then I do. So, in sha Allah, the opinion the brother posted is an opinion of a scholar on the subject.
I just wanted to double check..do I pay zakah on a tax return a year after I receive the return or as soon as I receive it?
I was thinking that a tax return is a result of the previous year's payments so I wasn't sure when to start the hawl.

alhamdulillah.
A year after.
Even though it was due to you, you didn't have control of it, so it's not totally 'your' money.
