Salaam, I've read the book and I wanted to get a whatzit too!
The pin is a good idea, maybe you could get one that would work year round and says "ask me about islam".
or I saw pins from some convention that said "spread salam and..(had a smile at the bottom)"... people woud be like, what's salam??
Oh yeah, maybe you could put a salat program on your laptop and program it to automatically say the azan when it's time... So you're sitting in a room with other people and all of a sudden the azan goes off... lower the volume but don't turn it off until it's finished. they'll be like "what was that?!"
OR... sometimes we already have "whatzits" but still keep people from approaching us...
for example) how many times have we made wudu on campus? how many times have people caught us with our foots in the sink? haha, so i realized that usually in these situations we just ignore the other person, pretending nothing unusual ever happened, expecting them to ask so we can answer. But the average person will also pretend they didnt see anything because they don't want to offend you/seem stupid.
so next time you're making wudu in the bathroom and someone walks in, just break the ice with a joke and explain to them what you're doing. They'll admit they were wondering but didnt know how to ask...

"Spread Salaam" is a nice idea - I love it! hurm .. maybe the halaqa could made some pins/badges and sell them to the muslims http://forums.almaghrib.org/images/icons/icon10.gif! Insha Allah.
I know a brother who wears a jumper with "Ask me about Islam" at the back - masha Allah.
Other suggestions for Whatzit are .. (most of these are from lectures at Khutbah.com)
A smile is a charity
Say Bismillah
Hold Your Tongue
Have you said your adzkar?
You will be with the one you love
Good manners are the heaviest on the scale
Joke - only with the truth
Enjoin goodness and Forbid the evil
Erase your sins!! Follow up an evil deed with a good deed
If someone curses you in a matter that does not exist in you, do not find fault with him in a matter that he does have
The best blessing that a person can be given in this life is akhlaaq
You cannot beautify yourself with anything better than good akhlaaq
A person can reach the level of a person who prays all night and fasts all day just because of his good akhlaaq
The best of the Mu'mineen are the ones who are best in their akhlaaq
Allah is beautiful and loves beauty, and He loves noble akhlaaq and He despises lowly characteristics

I get a lot of people who stare at me because of niqaab. Most are just curiouse. now all I need is a pin or something that says : It's called niqaab, feel free to ask me why I wear it!

sytematics, that's a really good idea. sometimes people just dont know how to ask and a pin like that will let them know you're friendly and approachable.
i think that's a good idea even for hijabis.
And saying Bismilllah is another good idea. I know there's a dawah story in the seerah about that ..

I love it! This Ramadan our MSA gave out pins at Jumma that had statements on them like "I'm hungry and thirsty, ask me why". It was awesome, I wore a pin on my backpack all month and I would hear people behind me on the bus mumbling about Ramadan and fasting. One time, a guy getting off the bus said to his friend "I want to ask her!" and his friend said "It's because she's Muslim, she's fasting!" Pretty interesting. Your msn sounds cool.

sounds like a good idea.....now How do i get/make one of those? If you want really nice looking pins like those “make poverty history pins” http://forums.almaghrib.org/images/icons/icon14.gif, you can get them custom made at stores.
Or you can easily make your own pins by getting those pins people usually use as name tags, and instead of having your name on it, wright your statement/question.

“make poverty history pins” http://forums.almaghrib.org/images/icons/icon14.gif
They should have pins or shirts that say "Make poverty history!" on the front, and "give zakah!" on the back http://forums.almaghrib.org/images/icons/icon14.gif
Make Poverty History!...
Give Zakaah!
