I have a question:

Why was Ibn Hajr Asqalani's Fat-h ul Bari considered such a groundbreaking text?

How did it contribute to Hadeeth scholarship? How was it different from previous works by Hadeeth scholars?

Fat'h ul-Bari is indeed a major work in hadith. Ibn Hajar is one of the greatest scholars of hadith and his knowledge is vast indeed. He did make dua as he was about to drink the zam-zam water and asked Allah to grant him knowledge in hadith such as he would not grant to those after him and sheikh Albani mentions that Allah must have accepted his dua.

As for the book it aexplains the ahadith with ahadith both in meanings and in chains as it gathers a lot of other paths and variations regarding what Bukhari did gather. Not only in the science of hadith itself it has helped the other scholars a lot regarding narrators and references but also he mentions the benefits that can be derived from each hadith as well in a numbered fashion. So in it there is a detailed knowledge which is neccessary for both the simple and the scholar and indeed very few might not be in need of his work (those are dead already as they were his generation and those close to his time).

And Allah knows best.

Is this series available in English ? Or can it ever be translated ?? or atleast someone with good Arabic knowledge can take up the task of revising the Sahih Bukhari English volumes with footnotes from Fathul bari. I remember having seen a version of Bukhari in the language of Tamil with footnotes from Ibn Hajar's Fathul Bari . Inshallah ta'la , English should also be available .

Inshallah , someone should probably some day come up with atleast a Mukhtasar Fathul Bari in English ......... lets see the light of that some day ......it will be immensely useful inshallah ......
