Assalamu Alaykum

1)If someone wants to pray salah can they use someone as their sutrah? For example in masajids people sometimes pray behind other people who are also praying and use them as their sutrah. Is having sutrah fard or is it just sunnah?

2) I know that we can use a bed as a sutrah, but what if someone is sitting or sleeping on the bed, can we still pray in front of them, or do they have to move? I know in the Purification Act we learned that the Prophet (saw) used to pray in front of Aisha (ra) while she was sleeping at night. I know that, there houses were a lot smaller than ours, but what if the person is sitting on the bed is it permissible to pray in front of them?

Wa alaikum salam,

1) It is permissible to use another person as your sutrah. The proof of that is in Sahih Bukhari, from Naafi', who said that when Ibn Umar did not find a pillar in the masjid, he would say, "Turn your back towards me."

According to the majority of scholars, it is a very stressed sunnah, and to some scholars it is obligatory to have a sutrah.

2) Yes, it is permissible to pray in front of a bed that someone is sitting or sleeping on. And the proof of that is the hadith you just mentioned.

Wa Allahu a'alam.
