View Full Version : Words I can STOP using right now

As salaamu alaikum,
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day, should speak good words or be silent." [Agreed upon]
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When the son of Adam starts the day, all his limbs supplicate his tongue, saying, 'Fear Allah in respect of us. We move by you. If you go straight, we go straight. If you go crooked, we go crooked.'" [at-Tirmidhi]
---
One theme I came to understand in my journey of tazkiya is the effect my words had on my attitude (or is it the other way around??) :)
I also wanted to learn to speak efficiently and cut out idle talk. I wanted to cut out the excesses and exaggerations too. So I came up with a list of words or phrases to eliminate from my vocabulary.
So, what can you stop saying right now?
Here are a few that I had...
"like"
"not only that"
"what?" (to my parents)
"yo"
"siiick"
"like 5 million times"

inshaAllah, i'll contribute as well! :)
"whus happenin?"
"YO! Same here!!!"
"Ya Bint!"---and I'm not even arab..lol
"say wallahi" {After like every sentence}
I knew it!!! =)
Stop using the words 'right now'. You don't have to think about them and post them. You are saying them again then, aren't ya? :)
Or you can just be writing them, without 'saying' them, right? ;]

what an interesting thread, mashaAllah... here's what i need to chuck out:
"y'know?"
"i guess"--in my case, it seems to have taken the place of "yes" lol...would also be good to replace it with allahu'alam (Allah knows best) or remain silent, inshaAllah

i go to public school, so i hear people saying A LOOOT of stuff i don't want to hear...but since im around these people like 5 days a week, what they say really sticks in my head. so when i talk, i hear myself saying what i hear from them. and i do this unintentionally, without even realizing that im saying these things.
that's why (according to my mom) i talk like someone from the ghetto...im always saying "bro" and "man" and i somewhat have an accent...
it's actually really sad...i pray that i can stop saying these things and hang around better people so that my speech doesn't get affected

i thought of another one - maaad
MashaAllah Sr. MeowMix (cute name btw), that's a good idea - we should make a list of words we can substitute for the ones we want to stop using. And that's a good list you have there.

One substitute could be "A'oudhubillah"
But the problem sometimes with it is the potential of offending the other person.
I remember witnessing that as a third person. One Mulsim said that in response to another and the other got really offended and said "What am I? Shaytaan??"
The point to understand is that we are seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of something and not from a Muslim brother! But still, I would only use it privately and not in someone's face.
And as mentioned in the post above, "SubhaanAllah" is probably the best to use since it cannot offend anyone insha'Allah.

maybe something forgiving and less judgementalI guess it depends on what you're responding to.
Maybe "La howla wa la qoo wata illa billah"
Or just "La illaha illa Allah"
Yes, a good way to go about this is to list all the words you want to stop saying and give a list of substitutes. Rather than just being critical, be constructive as well.
I'd like to stop saying, "Yo." It sorta just pops out when someone calls my name. Maybe I can replace it with "Yes?"

Some words I cant stop saying are:
" Are you serious?"
" Say wallahi"
" Com On?"
" Bro man listen"
Other words too but these pop in my head quick.. insha allah im looking for subsitutes. May allah forgive out shortcommings and our wasteful words, ( As we all know that every word that we say is being written by nobel angles) Check Surah Qaf for reference.

i like how that sounds Insha'Allah maybe beneficial replacements for the words you can't say how about everytime someone posts up a word they can't say Insha'Allah they can replace with a new word that will bring benefit
Let me begin:
Oh my God... Subhana Rabbil Archil Athem or Subhana'ALLAH
This way we can replace those old not-so-great with some rewarding words

As-salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmat Allah,
I've heard this from others, and I really liked it!
They say "it-taqi-llah" instead of "for real?" or "no way!" or "Seriously?"...etc.

Are not some of these words just colloquial? I can see how some of the negativity can/should be replaced or the impulse to always tell someone "say Wallahi" but I find most of the others to be an issue of 'urf. You will find exaggerations and emphasis in the Arabic language. That being said, I do despise very much the 'I wish i were a gangsta' lingo.
Also, our British brother can you stop saying and spelling "innit"???! :)

I agree with you brother, and Allah knows best. I also think, however, that it is nice to change a habbit-phrase to a phrase that reminds us of Allah subhana wa ta'aala, waAllahu A'alem.
I am quoting the thread starter below. I think this is where he states his objective:

Yep, thats true brother about the british using 'innit' too much and can definetely be taken out! I should've put that into one of my list! its kinda hard if you've lived in that country for so long an aftr evry sentence or so, you have 2 add innit to it!
so instead of 'innit', you could say 'Allahu 'alam' cos 'innit' is short for 'isnt it', well Allah knws best really....

I gave someone their change back (I work at a store) and his reply:
"thanx mama" ??!!!!
I went to bed thinking that night someone my age called me "mama" and someone might think that was cool. Subhanallah, where are we living??!!!As-salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmat Allah,
I ride public transportation regularly, and the other day I heard a man call a woman (stranger to him) "baby"--it sent chills up my spine. I'm pretty sure neither of them were Muslim, but Alhamdulillah for Islam...I would like to think that if a strange man saw a woman dressed as a Muslimah, he would not use that kind of language with her.

1) Don’t be stupid
2) You’re too naive
3) Say Word?
4) Holla Back!
5) Like Whoa!
6) Lower your gaze playa (maybe that’s not really a bad one)
7) I’m saying though…
8) I can explain (when in fact, I cant explain)
9) It’s been a minute…
10) Catch you on the next turn…
11) What’s really GOOD!

I agree with what was said earlier about being influenced by the language we hear at school. One of the things that really helped me was pointing out to my friends when they would swear, or backbite.
