Assalam-o-alaikum

I am not sure if this question should be asked here...i read a quote and I would like someone to explain it to me insha'allah

"Whoever sees sincerity in his sincerity, his sincerity is itself in need of sincerity. The destruction of every sincere person lies in his sincerity(he is destroyed to the extent that he sees sincerity in himself). When he abandons seeing sincerity in himself, He will be sincere and purified""

I am confused...

As-salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmat Allah Sister,

Please correct me if this is wrong, but I believe (for contextual purposes) the quote is a saying of the salaf, and sincerity here is intended as the English translation of Ikhlas.

I think I will default to someone more qualified for an explication, but I thought that these might also help provide context:

It is reported from Abu Uthmaan that he said: Ikhlaas is to forget the vision of creation by constantly looking at the Creator.

It is reported from Ibraheem bin Adham that he said: He is not truthful to Allaah who loves fame.

(I took all three of these from an online excerpt from The Book of Sincerity by Hussain al-Awaaishah).

And Allah knows best.

WaAlaikum Alsalam waRahmatullahi waBarakatu

I'm not sure if this quote if from a sound source, thus I too would like the reference to this... However the Quote is Saying, waAllahu A'laam, that ...

"Whoever [ENSURES] his sincerity, his sincerity is itself in need of sincerity. The destruction of every "sincere" person lies in his [CONFIDENCE] (he is destroyed to the extent that he sees sincerity in himself) -[EVEN WHEN HE IS NOT SINCERE]. When he abandons [BEING CONFIDENT] in [HIS SINCERITY], He will be sincere and purified"

Basically, It is silimar to the Quote of Imaam AlShafii' Rahimahullah, When he said:
"All humans are dead except those who have knowledge; and all of those who have knowledge are asleep, except those who do good deeds; and those who do good deeds are deceived except those who are sincere;and those who are sincere are always in a state of worry!" <-- b/c they are always questioning if their 'sincerity' is really for the sake of Allah alone!

May Allah make us from amongst the sincere ones *ameen*

The statement can be found through salafipublications (online version) under "Sayings of the Salaf on Sincerity," which is credited to Author : Hussain al-Awaaishah
Source : The Book of Sincerity. The quote reads:

14. One of them said: Whoever sees sincerity in his sincerity, his sincerity is itself in need of sincerity. The destruction of every sincere person lies in his sincerity, (he is destroyed) to the extent that he sees sincerity in himself. When he abandons seeing sincerity in himself he will be sincere and purified.

WaAllahu Ta'aala A'alem.

Ameen to your dua'.
