As salaamu alaikum everyone:

Unfortunately, I was not able to be at the Qabeela meeting on Saturday, because I was ill and scheduled a doctor's appointment during lunch time. I was unable to suggest my idea for a dawah project. Therefore I will post it here.

Insha'allah, I got this idea from a fellow teacher at Al-Huda. We could offer a service to public and private schools to provide speakers who would give basic information about Islam to students. For instance during Ramadhan they could have an actual Muslim come and informm them about Ramadhan. During Multi-cultural days a brother and/or sister could be available for questions and giving a short talk. This would be for classes following current events, they could have a Muslim's perspective. Also, almost all Middle School and High School classes study the lands of Islam and the Muslims we could offer talks specific to their study.

We could create a website and a pamphlet and make ourselves known to educators. On the website we could offer links to authentic information about Islam.

This personally interests me because the first time I found out about Islam it was in a high school women's studies class. The teacher showed us a film about oppressed women all over the world. Of course Muslim women were highlighted. Thankfully, this misinformation did not keep me from the deen, Alhamdulillah!! However, wouldn't it be great to disspell some of the information kids in America learn!

We could charge a small fee and use the money to further other dawah projects. We could do small training classes in the Qabeelah, etc.

Any teacher worth their cloth loves to provide real life learning experinces for their students. They know it is better to learn from someone who actually has knowledge of a situation than someone who has just read about it. I think there would be a big desire for this type of thing.

So what do you think.

Asalaamu `alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu,

Check out www.njisb.org (http://www.njisb.org) ... I believe they do exactly what you are talking about. Perhaps you can work with them to start a chapter in Maryland inshaa' Allah :D

As salaamu aleykum wa rahmatulaahi wa barakaatuh

That sounds like a great idea masha Allah.

Maybe, you can post your findings on the forum if you don't mind.

Jazaaki Allaahu Khayr - I take you want to be the ameerah of this project? If you do, please e-mail me at abu_hurayrah AT AlMaghrib DOT org. I will add this project to the list, and add you as ameerah.

We can cover details later, in shaa Allaah.

As salaamu alaikum:

Update: As mentioned in my email I don't mind being the ameerah if someone else is able to co-chair this project. I know my time is limited. Also I contacted the New Jersey Speakers Project who actually do this type of thing, but I have had no reply so far, so I guess it would just be developed from what we come up with.

So, is any one else interested on working on this type of project? Let me know.

As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

In California, the Islamic Speakers' Bureau has already developed many materials for this type of dawah. They have color transparencies on CD, a booklet of premade forms for publicity and administering the program, and they also support the establishment of similar Bureaus in other states. I'm not sure but you may find ISB materials with the brother in Darussalaam's TRUTH office. Also, here's their site

Awesome idea!

Isn't this project something we can run through/with FAITH, DUS's, dawah organization? It's a very nice project but I think would require a lot of resources that our Qabeelat may not have right now. I think if we can get a core group of brothers and sisters dedicated to this from our Qabeelat and have them work through Faith, we could get a lot more done.

Faith may already have some connections with local schools. A brother working with Faith told me last weekend they were going to host 40 Univ of Md. students to come for a discussion on Islam. I also think we need to identify people who are involved with public schools because they can really push this effort. Does anybody know of any?

As salaamu alaikum:

Insha'allah perhaps your right, but it would be T.R.U.T.H. that hosted the event today. I will mention this idea to Brother Ismaeel and see what he thinks.

As salaamu alaikum:

A fellow Al-Maghrib student known on the board as Mr. Espy is involved with the New Jersey Speakers Bureau and has offered to possibly come to Maryland and speak to those interested about starting a speakers bureau in our area.

I have also emailed T.R.U.T.H. and hope to hear back from them as to whether they would be interested.

I don't think this is impossible or too big. We make it as big as we want it to be. So for instance we have the speakers and their schedules ahead of time and we only book for when they are available. In the beginning we can even limit ourselves to just doing speeches during Ramadhan and see how it goes.

Please respond if you are interested in working with this project. Let us at least see if we can do it for the sake of Allah!!!

Alhamdulillah! May Allah reward you both for stepping up so quickly! A brother from T.R.U.T.H. now called The Islamic Information Center of Dar-us-Salaam, contacted me and is going to check out the website and get back to me I guess as to what they could do.

Keep posted!

Umm Zaynab

O Allah, please accept this from us.

As salaamu alaikum:

Brother Ishmael from the Islamic Information Center of DUS emailed me and said that DUS is working on a similiar project called building bridges. I really dislike dividing efforts, so if they are thinking about doing this perhaps we as a Qabeela can assist withthe effort. He said he would get back to me though regarding his final thoughts on the matter. I just wanted to get an idea for what you all thought.

W'salam,

I can speak with Br. Ismael today at DUS. I will see what his plans are for 'building bridges' and see how we as a qabeelat can help him, insha-Allah. We are trying to run a similar joing-effort-project with the Muslim Affairs Council (MAC) to help the incarcerated brothers. I also dislike dividing efforts, so I agree with you that we should work with them, insha-Allah.
