MAS Service Corps Iowa Flood Relief Update

Muslim Community Urged to Donate and Volunteer

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (MASNET (http://muslimahwritersalliance.com/MASFF/msc_iowa_flood-08_campaign_update.pdf) & News Services) June 16, 2008,

http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=445057bcf9&attid=0.1&disp=emb&view=att&th=11a94267e30f36afThe Muslim American Society Service Corps (MSC), in its ongoing effort to assist flood victims in Iowa as part of its Flood Relief 2008 Campaign, brings you the following update on the increasing catastrophic conditions on-the-ground.

According to CBS and AP news affiliates a mandatory evacuation was ordered early Saturday for 270 homes after a 100-foot-wide levy breach from the Des Moines River began pouring water into an area north of downtown Des Moines. Immediately threatened at the point of breach is the Birdland Park neighborhood and North High School.

To date, nine people are dead as a result of the massive flooding that swept through Iowa and other parts of the Midwest in the past week.

One of the hardest hit areas is Cedar Rapids, Iowa (population 120,000), where record floodwaters are slowly beginning to fall, however, officials estimate it will be at least four days before the Cedar River drops enough for workers to even begin pumping out water that has submerged more than 400 blocks, threatened the city's drinking supply and forced the evacuation of a downtown hospital.

As of Friday it was determined that at least 438 city blocks were under water, hospital patients in wheelchairs and stretchers have been evacuated and as many as 10,000 townspeople have been driven from their homes.

Additionally, it has been reported that Fire Department David Koch has stated that Cedar Rapids has only one of 44 wells working. "We're only producing 25% of the water that we need. Unfortunately, we're still using more water than we're producing. So we're still asking residents, businesses and industry to severely cut back on water use."

The scope of the damage is extensive; with preliminary estimates in Cedar Rapids exceeding $737 million, and officials are projecting a long recovery.

While Cedar Rapids is actually watching the waters recede, just south of Cedar Rapids, in Iowa City, the Iowa River is expected to reach 33 feet to 34 feet late Monday or early Tuesday, far above the 25-foot flood stage.

It has also been reported that Gov. Chet Culver has declared 83 of the state's 99 counties disaster areas, a designation that helps speed aid and opens the way for loans and grants.

And at a time when U.S. citizens are experiencing increasing price jolts across-the-board, Iowa, America's No. 1 corn state and other parts of the Midwest, will also face additional economic setbacks due to crop losses. The Iowa Farm Bureau has already estimated that up to 1.3 million acres of corn and 2 million acres of soy beans - about 20 percent of the state's overall grain crop - have been lost to flooding.

Muslims in Iowa and across the country are urged to show their support in this critical time of need.

Dear brother Abdullah,

Please tell if Madison Wisconsin was affected? Because I work freelance for Al Jumuah Magazine, and I have not heard nor received and email from them in over a month.
