Bismillah.
I had an idea to allow AlMaghrib students and members of this forum to share in the reward (in sha Allah) of preparing the khutbahs that go on the Khutbah.com website.

So, I was thinking, I could put up the khutbah topic, then whoever wishes can help research the info. Then when I make the final khutbah, that info in sha Allah may make the final cut. If it does, thousands of people around the world will benefit from the effort.

Because of the success of the Sleeping habits thread, this is just the natural continuation. Jazakum Allahu Khayr for the brothers and sisters that got it started in their own thread. In sha allah, in this thread i'll regulate it a little more.

What I need shaytaan satanic techniques:
1. Verses that speak about it
2. Hadith incidents which talk about it
3. statements of the companions regarding it
4. Something pointform regarding it
5. Interesting stats regarding it
6. non-Muslim quotes regarding it
7. a folktale regarding it
8. poetry (arabic or english) regarding it
9. a misconception and it's reply regarding it
10. Argue why a topic like this should concern Muslims

How to submit your research:

------------------------------------------------------
1. Submit your research in summarized point form. Submit it here in this thread
2. Do not copy paste 100 pages of info. READ those 100 pages and try to summarize it into a max of 10 points.

You are welcome to research any of the 10 aspects. Don't feel overwhelmed, just pick one that interests you.

In sha Allah, I think this task will be very enjoyable and all of us will learn a lot! Warreenee Shatartak. :)

7. a folktale regarding it
I don't know if this counts, but one of the first things that comes to mind is the story of Juyrayj, the worshipper, who was mislead by shaytaan step-by-step to commit zinna with the sister of the three brothers, and then eventually kill the resulting baby and eventually the sister...finally getting him to commit kufr, and then shaytaan's disavowwal of him at at that point.

Of course, the clear benefits of this hadeeth is that shaytaan doesn't start with the greatest sins - he works on the little points, building up. This is part of the wisdom, surely, in that "what leads to haraam is haraam", because shaytaan starts off "slow".

Shaytaan acts as a trustworthy advisor, and then at your moment of "need' from him, he withdraws...

4. "From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one's heart after one remembers Allah)

Also, the advise of Ya`qoob to his son, Yoosoof:

5. He (the father) said: "O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers, lest they arrange a plot against you. Verily! Shaitan (Satan) is to man an open enemy!

The warning of Allaah (SWT) to Aadam about Iblees:

117. Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery.

60. Did I not ordain for you, O Children of Adam, that you should not worship Shaitan (Satan). Verily, he is a plain enemy to you.

24. (Allah) said: "Get down, one of you an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Hawwa (Eve), and Shaitan (Satan), etc.]. On earth will be a dwellingplace for you and an enjoyment, - for a time

(All Qur'aanic quotes curtosity of QuranicFinder.com)

That's a start, at least....

I know there's more than one monk that's narrated...so I might have mixed the names up. Either, I'm sure Muhammad knows the proper name, so I hope I didn't mislead anyone...

If that is the case, than which one is Jurayj? I remember he was mentioned in one of Yasir Qadhi's lectures, possibly Kitaab at-Tawheed....

2. Hadith incidents which talk about it

Bismillah

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that yawning is from Satan.

The Prophet said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him." Volume 4, Book 54, Number 509: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that yawning is from Satan and that Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning.

The Prophet said, "Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning, so if someone sneezes and then praises Allah, then it is obligatory on every Muslim who heard him, to say: May Allah be merciful to you (Yar-hamuka-l-lah). But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so one must try one's best to stop it, if one says 'Ha' when yawning, Satan will laugh at him." Volume 8, Book 73, Number 242: Narrated Abu Huraira: See also Volume 8, Book 73, Number 245:, Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said a good dream is from Allah and a bad dream is from Satan.

Volume 4, Book 54, Number 513: Narrated Abu Qatada:

I heard the Prophet saying, "A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan. So if anyone of you sees (in a dream) something he dislikes, when he gets up he should blow thrice (on his left side) and seek refuge with Allah from its evil for then it will not harm him." Volume 7, Book 71, Number 643: Narrated Abu Qatada:

The Prophet said, "A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan. So whoever has seen (in a dream) something he dislike, then he should spit without saliva, thrice on his left and seek refuge with Allah from Satan, for it will not harm him, and Satan cannot appear in my shape." Volume 9, Book 87, Number 124: Narrated Abu Qatada:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that Satan stayed in the upper part of a nose all night.

The Prophet said, "If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night." Volume 4, Book 54, Number 516: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said a cock crows because it has seen an angel and donkeys bray because they have seen Satan.

The Prophet said, "When you hear the crowing of cocks, ask for Allah's Blessings for (their crowing indicates that) they have seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek Refuge with Allah from Satan for (their braying indicates) that they have seen a Satan." Volume 4, Book 54, Number 522: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that Satan touches all human offspring making them cry.

Abu Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'There is none born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child." Then Abu Huraira recited: "And I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from the outcast Satan" (3.36) Volume 4, Book 55, Number 641:Narrated Said bin Al-Musaiyab:Also, same thing at Volume 6, Book 60, Number 71:, Narrated Said bin Al-Musaiyab:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that devils spread out at night time and that Satan does not open a closed door.

Allah's Apostle said, "When night falls (or when it is evening), stop your children from going out, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night has passed, release them and close the doors and mention Allah's Name, for Satan does not open a closed door. Tie the mouth of your water-skin and mention Allah's Name; cover your containers and utensils and mention Allah's Name. Cover them even by placing something across it, and extinguish your lamps." Volume 7, Book 69, Number 527: Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said a child born from a union where a parent said a "phrase," Satan cannot harm the child.

The Prophet said, "If anyone of you, when intending to have a sexual intercourse with his wife, says: 'Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna-sh-shaitan, wa jannibi-sh-shaitan ma razaqtana,' and if the couple are destined to have a child (out of that very sexual relation), then Satan will never be able to harm that child." Volume 8, Book 75, Number 397: Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

Muhammad said that during sleep Satan ties knots at the back of the head.

Allah's Apostle said, "During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, 'The night is, long, so keep on sleeping,' If that person wakes up and celebrates the praises of Allah, then one knot is undone, and when he performs ablution the second knot is undone, and when he prays, all the knots are undone, and he gets up in the morning lively and gay, otherwise he gets up dull and gloomy." Volume 4, Book 54, Number 491: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that Satan peed in the ear of a man.

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said Satan can not impersonate him in a dream.

The Prophet said, "Name yourselves with my name (use my name) but do not name yourselves with my Kunya name (i.e. Abu-l Qasim). And whoever sees me in a dream then surely he has seen me for Satan cannot impersonate me. And whoever tells a lie against me (intentionally), then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire." Volume 1, Book 3, Number 110: Narrated Abu Huraira: Also at Volume 8, Book 73, Number 217: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said earthquakes and afflictions come out of the side of the head of Satan.

(The Prophet) said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and our Yemen." People said, "Our Najd as well." The Prophet again said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and Yemen." They said again, "Our Najd as well." On that the Prophet said, "There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head of Satan." Volume 2, Book 17, Number 147: Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - choked Satan

The Prophet once offered the prayer and said, "Satan came in front of me and tried to interrupt my prayer, but Allah gave me an upper hand on him and I choked him. No doubt, I thought of tying him to one of the pillars of the mosque till you get up in the morning and see him. Then I remembered the statement of Prophet Solomon, 'My Lord ! Bestow on me a kingdom such as shall not belong to any other after me.' Then Allah made him (Satan) return with his head down (humiliated)." Volume 2, Book 22, Number 301, Narrated Abu Huraira

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said Satan passes wind and runs so he may not hear the Adhan (call to prayer).

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that when praying while standing, Satan puts doubts into the person.

Allah's Apostle said, "When anyone of you stands for the prayers, Satan comes and puts him in doubts till he forgets how many Rakat he has prayed. So if this happens to anyone of you, he should perform two prostrations of Sahu while sitting. Volume 2, Book 22, Number 324: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said that Satan can reach into a person's body the same as blood reaches it.

Safiya, the wife of the Prophet told me that she went to Allah's Apostle to visit him in the mosque while he was in Itikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She had a talk with him for a while, then she got up in order to return home. The Prophet accompanied her. When they reached the gate of the mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were passing by and they greeted Allah's Apostle . He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint Huyai." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O Allah's Apostle!" And they felt it. The Prophet said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as blood reaches in it, (everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds." Volume 3, Book 33, Number 251: Narrated Ali bin Al-Husain: Also, see 254

Muhammad - sal Allahu alayhi wassalaam - said affliction comes out of the side of Satan's head.

The Prophet stood up and delivered a sermon, and pointing to 'Aisha's house (i.e. eastwards), he said thrice, "Affliction (will appear from) here," and, "from where the side of the Satan's head comes out (i.e. from the East)." Volume 4, Book 53, Number 336: Narrated 'Abdullah:

I saw Allah's Apostle pointing towards the east saying, "Lo! Afflictions will verily emerge hence; afflictions will verily emerge hence where the (side of the head of) Satan appears." Volume 4, Book 54, Number 499: Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:

Good points, but what are the devils techniques ...
Or, if the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, warned us from doing something that Shaytaan uses, how does that harm us?

There is actually a lot to this, remember Shaytaan has 1000's of years of experience on us because he was here from the beginning of man on earth.

Aims of Shaitan

o Who is the greatest enemy?
o Allah has told us in the Quran, in Surah Yaseen:
"Did I not ordain for you, O Children of Adam, that you should not worship Shaitân . Verily, he is a plain enemy to you."
o He became our enemy even before we knew ourselves. So he is fully aware of our weaknesses.
Recorded in Muslim:
“When Allah fashioned Adam in Paradise, He left him as long as He wished to leave him. Then iblis roamed around him to see what he actually was and when Iblis found him to be hollow from within, he recognized that the new creature had been created with a disposition such that it would not have control over itself.”
o Has been our enemy from the beginning of time. Knows us really well.
o When the command to prostrate came, he disobeyed and when Adam opened his eyes he found a tremendous and great gesture; and also found a great enemy…
o Satan was cast out of paradise but he took a promise from Allah…
(Iblîs) said: "Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up "
(Allâh) said: "You are of those allowed respite."]
o Then accursed one made a promise and vow to himself.
(Iblîs) said: "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them on Your Straight Path."
o Allah further describes Shaitan’s eternal hostility towards us:
"Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones."
o Satan’s Play on Desires:
"He [Shaitan] makes promises to them, and arouses in them false desires; and Shaitan's promises are nothing but deceptions. "
o Since he is our greatest enemy, Allah has described his strategies and deception in detail.. How can we know when Satan is being victorious over us? Need to have a good understanding of his goals. What is he trying to get us do?
1. His supreme goal is to take us out of Islam, to kufr or disbelief in Allah:
"Surely, Shaitân (Satan) is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire."
o And after leading them into hell-fire, he will abandon them and declare his innocence.
" like Shaitân, when he says to man: "Disbelieve in Allâh." But when (man) disbelieves in Allâh, Shaitân (Satan) says: "I am free of you, I fear Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!"
o His ultimate goal is to prevent people from gaining knowledge so that he ultimately leads them to disbelief.
o Person becomes a slave of Shaitan instead of a slave of Allah.
o He will lead the most miserable life in this world and in the hereafter.

2.If he’s not successful in leading people to kufr, he will try to involve them in all sorts of heresies.
o Sufyan al-Thawri: “Heresy is more beloved to Satan than sins.” He continues “One may repent from sin but one will never repent from bida’a”
o Evidenced in an Authentic Hadeeth, the Prophet sallalahualayhi wassallam said that Shaitan says: “I have destroyed the sons of Adam by sins, and they have destroyed me by asking Allah’s forgiveness and by saying ‘La ilaha illa Allah’. Having seen that, I breathed temptations in them so they would not ask Allah’s forgiveness when they committed sins because they thought they were doing good deeds.” [taken from al-Jumuah magazine]
3. If not shirk/bida’a, then he will go for Major sins.
The Prophet said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." The people enquire, "O Allah's Apostle! What are they? "He said, "
o To join others in worship along with Allah,
o to practice sorcery,
o to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause,
o to eat up Riba (usury),
o to eat up an orphan's wealth,
o to give back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and
o to accuse, chaste women, who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers. ”

Another of those great sins satan loves is hatred and division amongst the muslims

The Prophet(saw) said:
“Verily, Satan despairs that he should ever be worshipped by the performers of prayer. But he will instigate between them” (Recorded Muslim)
o Especially causing discord b/w husband and wife.
o Beware of the Steps of Shaitan: In another hadith recorded by Ahmed:
o“ The Shaitan sits in all the paths of the clidren of Adam.
o He sits in the Path of Islam and says, “Will you embrace Islam and leave the religion of your father and grandfathers?” The man disobeys him and embraces Islam.
o Then he sits in the path of migration (hijra) and says, “will you migrate and leave your native land?” The man disobeys him and migrates.
o Then satan sits in the path of Jihad and says, ‘The Struggle is with your life and wealth. If you fight your you will be killed and your wives will marry others and your wealth will be distributed.’ He disobeys and makes jihad.
o Whoever does that, has the right upon Allah to enter Paradise. And who is killed has a right upon Allah to enter Paradise. And whoever drowns has a right upon Allah to enter paradise. And whoever has his neck broken by his animal has the right upon Allah to enter Paradise”

3.If not the Major sins, he will work on the minor sins. Example of minor sins and fly.

4. If not that, he will stop you from doing good deeds.

5. If not that, then he will stop you from doing a better deed than what you’re actually doing. Basically he never stops working.

more to come inshaAllah....

If that is the case, than which one is Jurayj? I remember he was mentioned in one of Yasir Qadhi's lectures, possibly Kitaab at-Tawheed....

I think Juraij is the monk who was framed of the Major crime by people, and people were about to punish him until the child spoke miraculously and cleared Juraij of his innocense and revealed the plot of the Unchaste woman.
Whereas Barseesa is the story you mentioned initially about the monk committing zina with woman he was given guardianship by her four brothers and he eventually ended up prostrating to Shaitan.

This isn't about how the shaytaan tricks people but it's related.

Al-Hasan Al-Basree said:

If the shaytaan looks at you and sees that you are consistent in an act of obedience to Allaah, he will try to come to you again and again. If he sees that you are persistent in your actions (despite his efforts) he will tire of you and leave you. But if he sees that you are one day like this and one day like that, he will have high hopes in you.

(Read even if you're busy)

Satan called a worldwide convention of demons.

In his opening address he said,

"We can't keep Muslims from going to Mosque."

"We can't keep them from reading their Quran and knowing the truth."

"We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their Allah and his messenger Muhammad."

"Once they gain that connection with Allah, our power over them is broken."

"So let them go to their Mosques; let them have their covered dish dinners, BUT steal their time, so they don't have time to develop a relationship with Allah and his messnger Muhammad."

"This is what I want you to do," said the devil:

"Distract them from gaining hold of their Allah and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!"

"How shall we do this?" his demons shouted.

"Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds," he answered.

"Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow."

"Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles."

"Keep them from spending time with their children."

"As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work!"

"Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice."

"Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever they drive." "To keep the TV, VCR, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their home and see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays music constantly."

"This will jam their minds and break that union with Allah and his messenger Muhammad."

"Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers."

"Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day."

"Invade their driving moments with billboards."

"Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, mail order catalogs, sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services and false hopes."

"Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines and TV so their husbands will believe that outward beauty is what's important, and they'll become dissatisfied with their wives. "

"Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands at night."

Give them headaches too!

"If they don't give their husbands the love they need, they will begin to look elsewhere."

"That will fragment their families quickly!"

"Give them story books to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Salat."

"Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on Allah's creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead. "Keep them busy, busy, busy!"

"And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences."

"Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Allah."

"Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause."

"It will work!" "It will work!"

It was quite a plan!

The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Muslims everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there.

Having little time for their Allah or their families.

Having no time to tell others about the power of Allah and his messenger Muhammad to change lives.

I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes?

You be the judge!!!!!

Does "BUSY" mean:

A Dialogue with Satan
By Sheikh: Aa'ed Al Karny

Deep at night, I had this dialogue with Satan. Shortly, I heard the Fajr prayer call. I wanted to go to the mosque.

He said: "The night is still long, so take a nap."
I said: "I'm afraid I'll miss my obligatory prayer!"
He said: "There is much time to go "
I said: "I'm afraid I'll miss praying in congregation."
He said: "Don't be too harsh on yourself in worship."
Then, I didn't wake up until the sun had already risen.

He whispered to me again saying: "Don't feel sorry for what you have missed. The day is still full of many other chances."
As soon as I started mentioning Allah, he brought to my mind all kinds of thoughts.

I said: "You are diverting me from making Duaa'."
He said: "Just delay it until the night." Shortly, I intended to repent.
He said: "Enjoy your young age before it comes to an end"!
I said: "I'm too afraid of death."
He said: "But your life will not end now."
I started to memorize Qur'an

He said: "Entertain yourself with songs."
I said: "But it's an unlawful thing to do."
He said: "Scholars differed on that matter
I said: "The evidences from the Prophet's sayings (peace be upon him) are with me"
He said: "But you know their sources are weak!"
A beautiful lady passed by, so I lowered my gaze.

He said: "What's wrong? It's just a gaze"!
I said: "A gaze puts me in a dangerous place."
He said: "It's lawful to contemplate in grace."
I went to the Kaaba (The Ancient House of Allah). There he was with me on the way.

He said: "What's the reason behind this trip?"
I said: "To make 'Umrah'."
He said: "You have risked dangers (on your travel) to do this Umra.
Don't you know that good deeds have plenty of other doors?!!"
I said: "But my life needs a change for the better"
He said: "Don't you know that you can't enter Paradise through your deeds?
I went to give advice to people.

He said: "Don't put yourself in an embarrassing situation.
I said: "But, my only aim is to benefit others."
He said: "That's a trap of self-admiration, and it is indeed the head of corruption."
I said: "Tell me your opinion about some people."
He said: " I can answer you of the private, as well as the general."
I said: "Ahmed Ibn Hanbal?"
He said: "His calling to follow Quran and Sunnah was killing me."
I said: "Ibn Taymeyah?"
He said: "His words hit my head like a daily beating."
I said: "Al-Bukhari?"
He said: "I can even burn my house with his book."
I said: "Al-Hajjaj?"
He said: "I wish 1000 of men are like him. His way is cure and happiness to my colleagues of Satans."
I said: "Pharoah?"
He said: "Oh, to him victory and support we owe."
I said: "Saladin, the Hero of the battle of "Hetteen"?"
He said: "Let us not talk of him…he brought humiliation to my sons, and buried our heads in mud."
I said: "Mohamed Ibn Abdul Wahab?"
He said: "His messages were like the heavenly fiery stars that were burning my heart"
I said: "Abu Jahl?"
He said: "The best kinship and brothers we are."
I said: "Abu Lahab?"
He said: "We are together in every step forever."
I said: "Lenin?"
He said: "Bounded by me, with Stalin on fire."
I said: "Nude Magazines?"
He said: "Are my holy books."
I said: "Satellites?"
He said: "Make people diabolical."
I said: "Coffee Shops?"
He said: "Welcome everyone who is diverted from Allah and the right way."
I said: "What is your duaa (athkaar)?"
He said: "Songs."
I said: "What is your job?"
He said: " False Hopes."
I said: "What do you think about the Markets?"
He said: "Clubs where my friends meet."
I said: "What do you think of the Socialist party?"
He said: "It is with which I have shared all my belongings, to whom I taught all my thoughts, intentions and prayers."
I said: "How do you misguide people?"
He said: "By desires, doubts, distracting amusements, hopes and songs."
I said: "How do you misguide women?"
He said: "I tempt them towards showing off their beauty, and favoring the prohibited over the lawful.
I said: "How do you misguide the Scholars?"
He said: "By paving the way for them to admiration and showing off, and by planting envy and pride in their hearts."
I said: "How do you misguide people as general?"
He said: "Through back-biting, tale-fabrication, wasting their times in things of no value and in useless cheap conversations."
I said: "How do you misguide merchants?"
He said: "By tempting them to deal with bribery, making them hate paying charity and by making spendthriftiness beloved."
I said: "How do you misguide young people?"
He said: "By making them fall in the trap of love, reckless in following Allah's orders and committing the prohibited."
I said: "What do you think of "Israel", the Jewish state?"
He said: "Oh, don't try to backbite and speak ill of my beloved home country, the most dear to my heart."
I said: "What do you think of Abu Nawwas?"
He said: "Such a respectful character. His poems really inspired me."
I said: "And "modernity"?"
He said: "The inheritors of our satanic knowledge."
I said: "Secularity?"
He said: "That's my belief, and its believers are the cheating magicians and creators of false hopes. We all bear same names."
I said: "What do you think of Washington?"
He said: "The state of my beloved ones and the base for my army. Indeed it is my nation."
I said: "What do you think of those people who call to the word of Allah?"
He said: "They are torturing me! They inflict a lot of pain and misery on me. They made me an old man with gray hair! They destroy all what I build! They make noise when I speak, read when I sing, and seek refuge from me when I show up."
I said: "What do you say about newspapers?"
He said: "Means for wasting people's time, especially that of the elite, and means for stealing money."
I said: "What do you think of the BBC?"
He said: "It's my weapon. Through it I put the poison in the honey, ignite wars between Arabs & the other nations and flatter both the oppressor and oppressed."
I said: "What did you do with the Crow?"
He said: "I made him kill his brother and bury him under earth till he disappeared."
I said: "What did you do with Karoon (Korah)?"
He said: "I whispered to him: You son of the old man. Save the treasuries to win. You are one of the greatest men."
I said: "What did you say to Pharoah?"
He said: "I told him: You are the greatest one in the palace. To win say: "Isn't it me who possess the power over Egypt?"."
I said: "What did you say to the one who drinks wine?"
He said: "I told him you should drink this grape's juice. It is the answer to all your problems. It wipes out your troubles. And don't worry, you know the way to repentance and its doors are always opened for you."
I said: "What kills you?"
He said: "Reading the verses of "Al Kursy" (the Chair). It prevents me from breathing and makes me feel I'm in an eternal prison, in a night full of misery."
I said: "Who are the most beloved people to you?"
He said: "Singers, poets that aim at misguiding people, sins doers, and every cunning person who goes astray."
I said: "Who is the most hateful person to you?"
He said: "Mosque-goers, everyone who kneels and prostrates to Allah, every pious and sincere worshipper, and every fighter in the cause of Allah."
I said: "I hereby seek refuge in Allah from you."
The moment I said so, he disappeared as though melting into the sand - and this is the liar's end.

Good points, but what are the devils techniques ...
Or, if the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, warned us from doing something that Shaytaan uses, how does that harm us?

Do you mean like using our left hand to eat because Shaytan uses his left hand?

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah, the Prophet (sas) said "Every person should eat with his right hand and hold his food with his right hand, because Shaytaan eats with his left hand, drinks with his left hand and holds his food with his left hand."

I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for because it doesn't seem like a techique per say, Allahu Aa'alm.

Here's the story of Barsisa:

Ibn Jarir said that `Abdullah Ibn Mas`ud interpreted the above Qur’anic verse. Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once, there was a woman grazing sheep and goats. She had four brothers. She (for some reason) used to spend the night at a monk’s cell. The monk committed fornication with her and she got pregnant. Satan came to him and said: Kill the woman and then bury her, for you are a reputable and highly respected man. (That is, don’t risk your own reputation for such a simple woman). The monk killed her and then buried her. Thereupon, Satan visited her four brothers in a dream while they were asleep and said to them: The monk committed fornication with your sister, and because she got pregnant, he killed her and buried her in such-and-such location. In the morning, one of them said: By Allah! Last night I dreamed of something and I do not know whether to relate it to you or just keep it to myself. They said: Relate it to us. He did so and one of them said: By Allah! I saw the same dream. Another said the same. And the fourth one said the same thing. They agreed that there must be something serious about that dream. They went to the king and appealed for his help against the monk. The king’s troops came to arrest him and he was taken away. On the way, Satan came to the monk (and whispered in his ears): I set you up. No one else can save you from this. Prostrate yourself before me just for once and in return, I will save you from this. Thereupon, the monk prostrated himself before Satan. When they presented themselves before the king, Satan said to him: I am free of you! Finally, the monk was killed.

I LOVE the title of this khutbah, it's so intriguing masha Allah! I'm sure the content will be even better:)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Just some thoughts I had from the story of Iblees and Aadam (AS) as mentioned in the beginning of Surat ul-A'raaf. I mention the related aayah's number for each.

1- Sits on straight path waiting (for perfect moment???) (16)

2- His actions (I'm putting mudaari' tense of verbs used):
yaq'ud (16), ya'tee (17), yuwaswis (20), yaftin (27), yadull (22), yuqaasim (21). Maybe we can look up these words.

3- Tries all possible ways to achieve his goals (comes to us from front, back, right and left) (17)

4- Perhaps his comment that Allaah will not find most of us grateful indicates that one of his goals/tricks is to make us forget Allaah's bounties upon us and therefore not thank Allaah through servitude to him.

5- The uncovering of the "saw'aat" keeps coming up in the aayaat. (20,22, 26,27) What is the significance of this?

6- Shaytaan swore to Aadam and Hawaa' that he was sincere in his advice. (21) Tries to gain our confidence??? What are some ways?

7- Shaytaan tries to make what he calls us to appear to be better for us (Told Aadam that eating from the tree could make him an angel/eternal.) We've been talking about shubha/shahwa on a tafseer surat ul-Baqarah related thread. Is the story of Aadam where this came up? It seems like Iblees was trying to tempt Aadam with the fruit as well as make him have doubts about the forbiddence. (20) Wallaahu A'lam.

8- Tries to make us immitate others (ex. our forefathers' way) and believe that is what Allaah wants of us (28)

-------------
This is all from my head so some inferences might not be correct.

One main way to protect ourselves from Shaytaan is DU'AA.

In Surat ul-A'raaf the Shaytaan says he will come to us from front, back, right and left...but he does not mention above and below. Our teacher in the Qur'aan school said that some shaikhs commented on this aayah saying that the shaytaan has no control over us turning to Allaah through du'aa (above) or through humbling ourselves to Allaah in sujood (below). (This kind of reminds of "iyyaaka na'budu wa iyyaaka nasta'een.) Rather the shaytaan tries to distract you from all around to keep you away from the two things over which he has no power.

Wallaahu A'lam.

She also suggested that we read the book "Madaakhil ush-Shaytaan 'alaa As-Saaliheen" by Dr. 'Abdullaah Al-Khaatir. I'll try to get hold of it and read it inshaa'Allaah.

SubhaanAllaah, I am so amazed at how every time I try to participate in one of these khutbah preparations the same topic keeps popping up everywhere I go...or maybe I'm just paying more attention to it then.

Also, Iblees was in a high position once upon a time...a great worshipper of Allaah and very knowledgeable. He knows that the cause of his downfall was pride. He tries to make us proud of our good deeds as well.

“How Much Land Does A Man Need?”
by Leo Tolstoy (1886)
translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude

(can find the whole story at: http://www.ccel.org/t/tolstoy/23_tales/htm/vii.iii.htm )

Summary:

- starts out as a conversation between two sisters: a comparison of city and country (peasant) life
- Pahom, the peasant husband, hears conversation; brags of how happy and contented he is; if he only had his own land, he “shouldn’t fear the Devil himself"
- Devil hears this; will help the man get land, thus getting Pahom into his power
- Pahom gets his own land; is proud at first, but soon dissatisfied
- Moves several times to get more and more land because he thinks he “needs more” and it will make him happy, each time inspired by a man “passing through” (the Devil in disguise)
- at last finds a place where they sell land by the day, from dawn until dusk, “as much as you can go round on your feet in a day is yours, and the price is one thousand rubles a day;” only condition is returning, by end of day, to same place of start, or money is lost
- fantasizes about how much land he can get; dreams he dies (and here is where he finds out that the men “passing through” were just the Devil in disguise)
- when he starts out for land, gets greedy, and goes out too far
- returns, under much strain
- makes it back, just in time... but... dies; is buried: “Six feet from his head to his heels was all he needed [of land].”

Insha' Allah that was coherent.

I'd like to add to this - I know it's a not necessarily a technique, but it's a clear evidence that it doesn't matter what your stature or status or level of piety is - anyone can fall from a position of grace and of being in good Islaamic status....

Such is the example of Iblees.

I remember learning that the name Iblees is from the root BaLaSa which means to despair or lose hope. Iblees is the one who has lost hope in the Mercy of Allah and he seeks to make us lose hope as well. Might want to double-check that though...

If that is the case, than which one is Jurayj? I remember he was mentioned in one of Yasir Qadhi's lectures, possibly Kitaab at-Tawheed....

he was mentioned in Yasir Qadhis lectures...'Dua the Weapon of the Believer' when his mother made a dua that may he see the face of a prostitute because he was neglecting his mother because of his devotion to worship.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim,

Im not sure if im aloud to contribute to this khuthba (feel free to take it out if im not aloud...sorry), been reading some of the posts and mashallah sounds real realy good, cant wait to here the end product insha'allah.

Neway i story comes to mind herd it on one of Ahmad Alis tapes about two friends, one is an alim (beliver who has alot of knowledge) and the other an abid (believr who has little knowledge but a devoted worshipper). Wel...the shaytaan went up to the the abid and asked him 'can Allah place the Heavens and the Earth inside an egg?'. Now the abid was confused and didnt know what to say and doubts started coming into his head. The shaytaan left and said this one iv crumbled, i have put doubts in the head of this one about the power of Allah, iv crumbled his imaan.

Then the shaytaan went up to the alim and asked him the same question 'can Allah place the Heavens and the Earth inside an egg?'. The alim replied dont be silly Allah is the all powerful, if He wished He can do anything. The shaytaan quikly left and said, this one we should avoid because instead of us turning him around he will turn us around.

So the point is the shaytaan and its followers will do evrything possible to decrease our imaan and take us out of the folds of islam. The question mite be seen harmless to some but depending on how it is answered the consequences can cost us our faith. Because doubts about Allah goes all the way back to tawheed and we all shud have a firm grasp of it, so our imaan cannot be taken away from us.

The abid who constantly worships Allah with the little knowldege he has, can be an easy target for the shaytaan, because he will not know how to tackle the trickes of the shaytaan, but the alim who has knowledge, new exactly what to say! so shows knowledge is truly a shield if used correctly.

And to help avoid being in shaytaans trap knowledge is cure. Which is why it is sooooooooo important to gain as much as we can and implement what we lern. As knowledge without action is a waste.

This can be found on Ahmad Alis tape 'THE DEVILS DECEPTION', i lisend to it ages ago so my memory mite be a bit rusty, was going to lisen to it now then contribute but me tape player is broken :( so thort id write down what i can remember, any1 feel free to correct me. ma salaam

Something about arming ourselves against the shaytaan with knowledge... what's the name of that 'aalim/'aabid (Maysarah?) that was praying when the shaytaan came to him with a beautiful face surrounded by light and said that he was his lord speaking to him. The worshipper spat in the face because he also had 'ilm...he knew that Allaah wouldn't show himself to a person in this world like that. The shaytaan then disappeared.

THE BIG CONFLICT

Shaytan Vs Mankind

This is an enemy more than the Jews and the Christians, more than the leaders, more than any thing else because he pledged to misguide the people.

The struggle between man and shaytan started a long time ago, as long as from the time of Adam (as) in Jannah, when the shaytan refused to obey the command of Allah to make sujud to Adam, and he was thrown out of jannah, and he pledged to mislead all of mankind with will of Allah

Allah (swt) said:

“Allah said to the angels, ‘I will make mankind from mud, when I make him ready, and I blow in him from my ruh, go and make sujud to him (this is a real physical sujud) and All the angels made sujud together, except Iblees he had takabbur and became from the kafireen, Allah (swt) said “O Iblees, what prevents you from making sujud to what I made with my two hands? Are you having takabbur or do you think that you are above to obey?” Iblees said: “I am better than him, you created me from fire, and you created him from mud.” Allah said: “go out (from Jannah) … and my curse is upon you till the day of Judgement.” He said: “O my lord, give some extra time until the day of resurrection (and see what I will do…)” Allah said: “I will give you that time till the time that is appointed” (Iblees) said: “By your dignity, I am going to mislead them all, Except your servant, those who have ikhlas.” Allah said: “The truth, by the truth, and the truth is always what I say, I am going to fill Jahannam with you, and with all of mankind that follow you.” Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this (Qur'an), nor am I a pretender. This is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds and ye shall certainly know the truth of it (all) after a while.” [EMQ Sad: 71-88]

So anybody who has takabbur on the command of Allah (swt) will become kaafir. At that time there was no kuffar that existed, only Iblees became kafir,

“O Iblees, what prevents you from making sujud to what I made with my two hands?”

Where Allah (swt) said “with my two hands” we do not make ta’weel, we say that Allah has two hands, and we do not know how. Iblees was racist, and said that he is better than man because he was made from fire; although he confessed that Allah created him (iblees), this is where he rejected, because he disobeyed Allah, he was rebellious to Allah (swt) because he refused to obey, and he implied that Allah (swt) is unjust and oppressor because Allah asked him to make sujud to Adam (as).

So Allah ordered him to leave the honoured position in jannah where he was with the angels, because he doesn’t deserve it.

Al Rajim is attributed to shaytan, meaning that he is the one that is always being stoned. However the idea that in Hajj, “we stone the shaytan” is not true and is not from Islam

Shaytan recognises that Allah (swt) is his lord, and asked him to give him time, and pledged to mislead the people, with temptation etc. This is a big challenge that he made, but the challenge is not to Allah, he could never to that, it is a challenge to mankind.

Ikhlas is sincerity, Allah pledged that shaytan will be in hellfire, and anyone of us who follow them. This struggle started in Jannah and the shaytan is trying to mislead us, and he misled Adam and Hawwa, and had them expelled from Jannah

In the first battle against man, he was successful, he was the cause to have Adam and his wife out from Jannah. Allah (swt) said:

“So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew together the leaves of the garden over their bodies. And their Lord called unto them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy unto you?" They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy Mercy, we shall certainly be lost." Go down. You are going to be enemies to eachother, and you are going to be on the earth for a while” [EMQ A’raf: ]

Hubut is called ‘landing’ it is not the end, it is the first battle lost, but there will be more, and He (swt) said that we will be enemies to one another, mankind against the shaytan. On the side of the believers will be men and jinn from the Muslims. And the shaytan has awliya from the men and jinn,

“Who whisper into the hearts of man, from the jinn and mankind.”

Allah (swt) mentioned here that the shayateen who whisper into the chests of the believers are not only from the jinn, but also from mankind, and Allah (swt) says:

فَقَاتِلُواْ أَوْلِيَاء الشَّيْطَانِ

“… Fight the awliya of the shaytan,”

The weapons of Shaytan

He has many tools to fight the believers,

1- THE CAPABILITY DAZZLING THE MISGUIDANCE (AL DHALAALAH)

Allah (swt) said:

“O my lord, by what ability you give me to mislead, I am going to make dazzling for them to mislead.” [EMQ Hijr 15: 39]

Furthermore Allah informed us in the Qur'an:

“By Allah, we sent many messengers to the people, but the shaytan dazzled their acts with temptations. He is also their patron today, but they shall have a most grievous penalty.” [EMQ Nahl: 63]

2- LYING AND DECEIVING

Allah (swt) said:

“When he came to them, And Allah (swt) said to them: “O Adam, go live in Jannah, and eat from anything you like, but do not go near that tree, or you will become the zalimun, Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, except that you will become angels, immortal and And he swore to them both, that he was their sincere adviser” [EMQ A’raf: 19-21]

- This is an example of the shaytan lying

Allah (swt) said:

“Shaytan promises you poverty and bids you to conduct unseemly, and Allah promises you forgiveness and bounties. And Allah cares for all and He knows all things,” [EMQ 2: 268]

3- THE ABILITY TO SEE YOU WITHOUT TO BE SEEN

Allah (swt) said:

“O children of Adam, don’t let shaytan mislead you, the way he took out your parents from Jannah, he took their clothes off in order to show their awrah. You are not able to see them, but we made the shaytan allied to those who do not believe.” [EMQ A’raf 7: 27]

- He has the ability to see us though we cannot see him

- They did not have awrah but they were covered

- And the shaytan convinced them to take off their clothes

The Prophet (saw) said:

“The shaytan will flow and circulate in the man the way the blood circulates.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

4- CAPABILITY TO KNOW NEWS AND INFORMATION FASTER THAN MAN

Because he is able to hear what the angels say beforehand.

- This is why the jews in the past used to use the jinn to find out things beforehand

- They used to ask the jinn to hear from the angels whether or not they have been ordered to bring rain, and use it to claim to be fortune-tellers.

A’isha narrated

“I heard The Prophet (saw) say: “the angels will come down in the sky, and they speak about what Allah has decreed in the heaven, the shaytan will hear it and pass it to the fortune-tellers, they will lie with that information a hundred lies with it.” [Bukhari 3210, Muslim 2228]

The objective of the shaytan is found in the ayah where Allah (swt) said:

“Do you see those who claim that they believe in what has been revealed to you and those before you and yet they refer to taghout in their disputes and they have been ordered to reject it, the shaytan wants them to be Mushrik.” [EMQ 4: 60]

The aim of shaytan is two things:

- To lead man to Shirk

- To lead man to hellfire

Allah (swt) said:

“Verily Satan is an enemy to you: so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents, that they may become Companions of the Blazing Fire. [EMQ 35: 6]

The Prophet (saw) said:

“The shaytan will face man in all of his ways, he will say to them on the way to Islam, “are you going to become Muslim and leave the religion of your fathers and grandfathers?” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and became Muslim, on the way to hijrah, the shaytan came and said “are you going to leave everything and make hijrah?” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and made hijrah. On the way to jihad, the shaytan came and said “are you going to fight and exhaust your life and money, and be killed? Your wife will remarry, and your wealth will be distributed.” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and went to jihad and the prophet (saw) said: “the one who does those three things, it is a duty upon Allah to take him into Jannah. And whoever has been killed in the way of Allah, Allah has a duty to take him into Jannah, and whoever is drowned in the way of Allah, Allah has a duty to take him into Jannah and anybody whose animal throws him while he was engaged in a duty in the way of Allah, it is a duty upon Allah to take him into Jannah.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad 15528 & Nasaa’i 2124]

So the Shaytan targets to misguide us on:

- The way to Islam (Da’wah)

- The way to Hijrah

- The way to Jihad

THE TARGETS OF THE SHAYTAN

1- HE WANTS TO TAKE PEOPLE TO THE HELLFIRE

Allah (swt) said: “Iblees was from the jinn.”, and he used to be praised, but now he has one purpose - to call people to the hellfire. He doesn’t feel that he deserves to go to hellfire by himself. He dreams to go into Jannah, and hopes that if he fulfils his pledge that Allah might forgive him.

However the story that claims that shaytan went to Musa (as), and asked him to ask Allah to forgive him, and that Musa (as) apparently told him to bow down to Adam in his grave etc is a complete fabrication and is incorrect.

2- HE WANTS TO MISGUIDE YOU COMPLETELY

Allah (swt) says:

“Verily Satan is an enemy to you: so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents, that they may become Companions of the Blazing Fire. [EMQ 35: 6]

Subra ibn abu faaka, I heard the prophet (saw) say:

“The shaytan will face man in all of his ways, he will say to them on the way to Islam, “are you going to become Muslim and leave the religion of your fathers and grandfathers?” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and became Muslim, on the way to hijrah, the shaytan came and said “are you going to leave everything and make hijrah?” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and made hijrah. On the way to jihad, the shaytan came and said “are you going to fight and exhaust your life and money, and be killed? Your wife will remarry, and your wealth will be distributed.” and the man disobeyed the shaytan and went to jihad and the prophet (saw) said: “the one who does those three things, he will enter Jannah. And whoever has been killed in the way of Allah, Allah has a duty to take him into Jannah, and whoever is drowned in the way of Allah, Allah has a duty to take him into Jannah and anybody whose animal throws him while he was engaged in a duty in the way of Allah, it is a duty upon Allah to take him into Jannah.” [An Nasaai – 2124 Ahmad & 15528]

The shaytan only targets Muslims, not kuffar. However, whatever the shaytan makes conspiracy against the believers - it is weak.

Allah (swt) says:

“The plot of the Shaytan is weak.” [EMQ 4: 76]

However he will mislead many, Abu Sa’id Al Khidree narrated that The Prophet (saw) said:

“Allah will say O son of Adam, he will say “Here I am, I listen and I respond, and all the goodness is in your hand, take out people of the hellfire, and all the ba’th will come out.” They asked “who?” he said: take from every thousand take one person, the others are in the hellfire. At that time there will be the young boy will have white hair, and the women will lose her newborn child, etc.” [Bukhari 3348]

THE WICKEDNESS OF THE SHAYTAN

1- SHAYTAN COMES AT THE TIME OF BIRTH

The Prophet (saw) said:

“There is no child born except that the shaytan will pinch him. He will start to cry from the pinch of the shaytan. Except for the son of Maryam and his mother.” [Bukhari 4548]

Abu Huraira said on this hadith:

“I seek refuge in you, for my daughter …” [Muslim 2366]

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“When a child shouts, the shaytan pinches him.” [Muslim 2367]

2- HE WILL COME WHEN A MAN IS WITH HIS WIFE

The Prophet (saw) said:

“If anyone comes to have intercourse with his wife and said: “O Allah, keep the shaytan far away from us, and from what will come from us” and Allah decides their to be a child between them, the shaytan will never harm him.” [Bukhari 7391]

Jabir narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Shaytan will reach you in all your spheres of life.” [Muslim 2033]

3- HE WILL COME WHILE HE IS SLEEPING

Abdullah ibn Amru narrated the Prophet (saw) said:

“… he makes tasbih ten times, Alhamdulillah ten times , and takbir ten times, after every salah, if he does so, it is 150 on the tongue, 1500 on the Mizaan, and if he goes to sleep and does the same, 100 times, it is 100 on the tongue and 1000 on the mizaan.”

The Prophet (saw) said:

“When somebody goes to sleeps, the shaytan will have three knots on the back of the head to keep you asleep, if someone wakes up and makes zhikr, one knot will be untied, if he makes wudu’, the second will be untied, if he prays salah, the third knot will be untied, if he does not do so, he will become khabith and lazy.” [Bukhari 1142 and Muslim]

The shaytan will come and give wet dreams, and bad dreams to the people. The Prophet (saw) said:

“If someone sees something he doesn’t like, let him say ‘A’udhubillahi minashaytanir rajim’ and spit…” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated that

“A man from the bedouin came to the Messenger (saw) and said: “I dreamt that my head came off and I was chasing it.” The Prophet (saw) said: “How dare you, do not tell me about how the shaytan played with you in your sleep.” [Muslim 2268]

Abu Huraira narrated

“The Prophet (saw) used to say: “If anyone of you wakes up and he makes wudu, let him rinse his mouth and nose three times, the shaytan will sit on your nose and urine in your mouth during your sleep.”

The shaytan also urines into your ear during sleep, so that you cannot hear the adhan. [Bukhari 1144]

4- HE WILL COME IN HIS FOOD

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated the Prophet (saw) said:

“If a man enters into his home, and he says Bismillah, or when he begins to eat, he says “bismillah” the shaytan will say to the shayateen, “there is nothing for you to eat, his house is protected.” And if he did not make zhikr when he entered his home, the shaytan will say “you will have a place to sleep tonight.” And if he eats without to say bismillah, the shaytan will say “you will have food tonight.””

Always lick the fingers, if you do not the shaytan will do so and could take the barakah from your food.

5- HE WILL COME IN THE MARKET

Salman narrated that:

“The Prophet (saw) said: “do not be the first person to enter the market, and do not be the last person to come out, that is the place that Allah hates and that is the battlefield of the Shaytan, and that is where he has his banner.” [Muslim 2451]

That is why the hadith says

“When you enter the market, raid.”

From Qais bin Abi … said:

“We used to be called the commissioners of the market, he (saw) said: “O People of business, the shaytan is always present when you trade, always have sadaqah” [Tirmizi 1208] (i.e. Give him all the donations – to show him all the defects in the goods, smile in his face, be flexible (bargain), the right of return within three days etc.)

[NB the Sunnah is for the one who is buying to ask for the price]

6- DURING SALAT: DISTRACTION/MOVING/BUSYNESS OF THE MIND IN THE SALAH

The wickedness of the shaytan will lead to him stealing some of your salah.

A’isha narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: (when she asked him about moving in the salah)

“That is what the shaytan stole (secretly) from your salah.” [Bukhari 751]

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Whenever the call for salah starts, the shaytan will run away loudly breaking wind, in order to make you hear that instead of the adhan. But when you start to pray he will return, and when you are yawning, he will come to him and will go between him and his nafs and say: “remember so..and..so, until the man finishes and he does not know what he says, or what he did.” [Bukhari 608]

- Yawning, burping, farting etc all call the shaytan.

The Prophet (saw) said:

“If anyone of you went to the salah, the shaytan will come to make talbees, until he doesn’t know how many rak’ah he prayed, let him make two Sajdah when he is sitting.” [Tirmizi 397]

Anas bin Maalik narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“When you come to pray, stand up, straighten your lines, and leave no gap, by Allah, I see the shaytan enter your lines even the space of a stone.” [An Nasaa’i 815, Abu Dawood 667]

Shaytan will continue to conspire against man, until the last second of his life. Muhammad (saw) informed us how to be protected from the shaytan, he made du’a to Allah, to protect him from the shaytan in everything when he is dying and in case the shaytan would bite him, and from the whispering of the shaytan in the time of the death, his bite is that he will make you say ‘Laa ilaha illallah, just in case there is a god.” [Nasaa’I 5531]

PROTECTION FROM THE SHAYTAN

1- AL IKHLAS

Allah (swt) said:

“Except the servant who is sincere.” [EMQ Hijr: 40]

2- TO BE A GOOD SUBSERVIENT SERVANT TO ALLAH

Allah (swt) said:

“My servant, you cannot go near except Al ghawin.” [EMQ Al Hijr: 42]

ibn Abbas said:

“Al Ghawin is the one who who does not engage in perfecting his ritual acts.”

If you fast, fast properly, if you pray, pray properly

3- SEEKING REFUGE IN ALLAH FROM THE SHAYTAN

Allah (swt) said:

“If a suggestion from Satan assail you, seek refuge with Allah. For He hears and knows (all things).” [EMQ A’raf: 200]

We seek refuge in Allah in certain times:

- When we are frightened

Abdullah bin Amru said the Prophet (saw) said:

“I seek refuge by the word of Allah, from Allah’s anger and from the evil of his servant, and from the wickedness of the shaytan and his presence.” After that Abdullah ibn Amru started to teach that to all of his children.” [Tirmizi]

And the one who was not mature, he used to write it on a paper and hang it on his chest, this is where ta’weez came from, but the sahabah said that they feared that it would be misunderstood. [Tirmizi and Abu Dawood]

- When we leave the house

Ibn Abbas narrated the Prophet (saw) said:

“When you leave the house say, Bismilla tawakkalna ‘Ala Allah, wa laa hawla walaa quwata illa billah, after that, the angels will answer, you have been guided and have become sufficient and protected and the shaytan will leave him saying ‘how can you harm the one who is guided, and protected?” [Tirmizi and Abu Dawood]

- When entering the Masjid

[Abu Dawood - 461]

- When reading the Qur’an

Allah (swt) said:

“When you recite Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from the shaytan.” [EMQ Nahl: 98]

- When you enter the toilet

The Prophet (saw) said:

“Whenever you enter the toilet, say ‘Audhubillah minal kubthi wal khaba’ith’” [Bukhari]

- When you get angry

The Prophet (saw) said about when one is angry:

“Seek refuge in Allah from the shaytan.” [Bukhari 3282]

- When you hear the braying of the donkey

The Prophet (saw) said:

“If you hear the voice of the rooster, ask Allah, the rooster will always see the angels, if you hear the braying of the donkey, seek refuge in Allah from the shaytan, the donkey will always see the shaytan.”

- In the salah

Jubair narrated that:

“The Prophet (saw) was praying salah, I do not know which salah exactly, he (saw) said: Allahu Akbar kabira … And I seek refuge in Allah from the shaytan, from his blow and his breathing and his whispering…” [Tirmizi]

4- RECITING QUR’AN

The Prophet (saw) said:

“Do not leave your house a cemetary, recite baqarah in the house, and shaytan will leave the house.” [Tirmizi 2877, Muslim 780]

You should do so regularly, pray in your home, recite Qur’an in the home, read hadith at home.

Abdullah ibn Mas’oud said:

“Whoever recites four verses from the beginning of surah Baqarah and Ayatul kursi, and the two ayat after ayatul kursi, and the last three verses of Baqarah, no shaytan will come near him nor his family that day, nor anything he dislikes, and if Qur’an is recited over someone majnun, and it is blown on his face, he will always go back to his sanity.” [Hadith Mawqouf - Darimi 3383]

5- MAKE ZHIKR

Zhikr is worship, so it is not allowed to make zhikr except to mention the name of Allah (swt).

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Whoever says, ‘laa ilaha illallah wahdahu laa sharikala lahul mulku walahul hamdu … in a day 100 times, he will get the reward of freeing a slave, and it will be recorded as 100 good deeds, and .. and no one can do better than that except by doing more.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated that

“The Prophet (saw) said: “if the night begins to enter, or it becomes night time, protect your children, bring the children inside and close the door, the shaytan are outside, after one hour after the night has passed, close the door in the name of Allah, the shaytan cannot enter a door closed in the name of Allah. [Bukhari 3280, 2010]

6- MAINTAIN WUDU’

The Prophet (saw) said:

““When somebody goes to sleeps, the shaytan will have three knots on the back of the head to keep you asleep, if someone wakes up and makes zhikr, one knot will be untied, if he makes wudu’, the second will be untied, if he prays salah, the third knot will be untied, if he does not do so, he will become khabith and lazy.” [Bukhari 1142 and Muslim]

7- DO NOT STAY ALONE

Always be with other people, whenever you are alone the shaytan will play with you, it is very difficult for the women who stay alone at home, the shaytan will whisper to her, saying that her husband does not appreciate her and encourage her to go out and let others look at her.

The three things that will destroy the women are the mirror, authority and their tongue.

Mu’dan Ibn Abi Talha Al Ya’muri narrated that Abu Darda’ (his wife was also a judge Umm Darda’) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“It is not allowed for any three in any village or any place except that they pray Salatul Jama’ah, if they do not the shaytan will control them, the wolf will eat from the sheep that strays away.” [Nasaai 847, Abu Dawood 457]

Mu’az ibn Jabl narrated the Prophet (saw) said:

“The shaytan is for the man like the wolf is to the sheep, he will always eat from the one who bows to the wolf, do not go astray alone be always with Al Jama’ah, be with the collective people all the time, and be in the Masjid whether traveller or resident.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad - 21524]

Abu Tha’labah narrated Amru said:

“Whenever Rasulullah used to go to any place, he used to go far away to all places, the Prophet (saw) used to tell them not to all live far from eachother, that they should live close together, he said that is from the shaytan (to live far from eachother).”

“They used to keep so close to each other that you could throw one blanket over them and cover them all.”

Abdullah ibn Umar said,

“Umar (ra) gave khutbah “… do not be diverted from the jama’ah, and stay away from firqah.

TOOLS OF THE SHAYTAN

2- WOMEN

3- MUSIC

4- RUSHING

5- FORGETFULNESS

6- GRADUAL PERSUASION BY WHISPERING

7- SHAHAWAAT

assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh..
this is a poem that i got from one of MSN groups

Whispers of Shaytan
Author: Souladvisor

Stay in your bed, don't make a fuss.
Your prayers can wait, give in to your nafs.

What! Go to the mosque, the path you'll pave?
Don't bother, think of the gas you'll save.

Why go the extra miles to be kind?
Don't share that smile, they won't mind

Listen to your parents, why should you?
You're big enough; don't let them tell you what to do!

Don't look at those orphans, what could they need?
You have your own problems, and family to feed.

Wear good hijab? Oh me, Oh my, you'll be targeted as a Muslim and put to shame.
Just wear no makeup, and dress simple and plain.

Go for Jihad? No not you.
It's not your problem, what can you do?

Don't worry about Jannah, your place is reserved.
I promise you'll get all you deserve.

Preach about Islam, and be nice?
Listen to me, and take my advice!!!

Don't fast during Ramadan, you'll feel dead.
Don't go for Hajj, the heat you'll dread.

Why give charity, or feed the poor?
Don't do it I say, They'll just ask for more.

Don't visit the Muslims, they'll bite your back.
Don't stop your work for prayer, it's money you lack.

Then he makes you hoard your wealth.
He thinks while he talks, and laughs to himself.

You take me as your friend, and don't give me a fight.
I'll take you to hell to gain respite.

On the judgement day we will meet.
Allah's plan we can not defeat.

Shaytan thinks and thinks of more to say.
Say A' oothoo billahi, and make him run away.

Dear believer, don't let shaytan put you to the test.
You can overcome him, just do your best.

Anyone post the article called "Busy?" If not.. here it is...

Satan called a worldwide convention.
In his opening address to his evil servants, he said “We can’t keep the Muslims from going to Mosque. We can’t keep them from reading the Quran and knowing the truth. We can’t even keep them from forming an intimate, abiding relationship experience with Allah. If they gain that connection with Allah, our power over them is broken.

So let them go to the Mosques, let them have their conservative lifestyles,

but steal their time so they can’t gain that relationship with Allah.

This is what I want you to do, servants. Distract them from gaining hold of their creator and maintaining that vital connection throughout the day! “

“How shall we do this?” shouted his servants.}

“Keep them busy in the nonessentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds” he answered.

“Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow.

Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6 – 7 days a week, 10 –12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles.

Keep them from spending time with their children. As their family fragments, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work! “

“Over stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice. Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever theyp drive, to keep the TV, VCR, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their homes.
And see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-Islamic music constantly.O

This will jam their minds and break that union with Allah.”

“Fill the coffee table with magazines and newspapers. Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day. Invade their driving moments with billboards. Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, mail order catalogues, sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and emotional offering of free products, services, and false hopes.

Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines so the husbands NN will believe that external beauty is what’s important, and they‘ll become dissatisfied with their wives. Ha! That will fragment those families quickly! “

“Even in their recreation, let them be excessive. Have them return from their recreation exhausted, disquieted, and unprepared for the coming week. Don’t let them go out in nature to reflect on God’s wonders. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, concerts and movies instead. Keep them busy, busy, and busy!! And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences and unsettled emotions.”

“Go ahead, let them be involved in soul winning. But crowd their lives with many good causes so they have no time to seek power from Allah.

Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause.

It will work! It will work! “

It was quite a convention. And the evil servants went eagerly to their assignments causing Muslims everywhere to get busy, busy, busy and to rush here and there.

I guess the question is:

Has the devil been successful at his scheme?

You be the judge! Friends, this message was sent to me by someone who cares and I though I could share it with you.

Please take heed of the message it brings:

Hadeeth advising us not to say "IF" I had only done this or that but to say "Qaddar Allaahu wa maa shaa'a fa'al" cuz "if" opens the door of/to the shaytaan.

Or, if the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, warned us from doing something that Shaytaan uses, how does that harm us?
I didn't understand what's meant by doing somethng shaytaan uses...but what about doing what shaytaan does? Those things must be harmful too? Things like eating with the left hand or walking with one shoe on and the other off? Wallaahu A'lam, these are things the shaytaan does and we are commanded to "khaalif" the shaytaan in them, right?

------

I just noticed that al ilm nur was also confused about what was meant. Could you please explain what you had in mind?

* I just remembered..."inna ash-shaytaana ya'idukum ul-faqr".

* Not a trick but may be related:

* Maybe good for conclusion:

* Steaking from prayer? Not really a "trick" but something to watch out for.

* Interesesting:

* Couple things can be deduced from this hadeeth:

* Here's another one about putting doubts:

يأتي الشيطان أحدكم فيقول : من خلق كذا، من خلق كذا، حتى يقول : من خلق ربك؟ فإذا بلغه فليستعذ بالله ولينته.صحيحالبخاريالجامع الصحيح3276

* Tries to make you forget:
أنه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول : إن موسى قال لفتاه : آتنا غداءنا، وقال : أرأيت إذا أوينا إلى الصخرة، فإني نسيت الحوت، وما أنسانيه إلا الشيطان أن أذكره. ولم يجد موسى النصب حتى جاوز المكان الذي أمره الله به.صحيحالبخاريالجامع الصحيح3278

* Tries to prevent one from night prayers:

ذكر عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم رجل نام ليلة حتى أصبح، قال : ذاك رجل بال الشيطان في أذنيه، أو قال : في أذنه.صحيحالبخاريالجامع الصحيح3270

*Distracting one from/during prayer:

Here's a non-Muslim quote:

"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." [Movie: The Usual Suspects]

Don't know if you're cool with quoting movies in your khutbahs though...

Is there a hadeeth that says that the word "will" is one of the shaytaan's tools? Through procrastination and "tool ul-amal" the shaytaan ends up preventing us from many good deeds.

Probably too late but....

* Encouraging one to concentrate on doing something good but of less benefit than another action to keep him away from the better (Perhaps an example might be...encouraging qiyaam ul-layl to the point that the person falls asleep and misses fajr)

* Beautifying the path of misguidance..making them think it is the better way...wa zayyana lahumu ushaytaanu maa kaanoo ya'maloon (al-an'aam 43)

I do not think its to late, because he might do the speech again at a later time.

And He incorporated a story about my mother into it when he did it in columbus :D

Technique of shaytaan
Shaytan uses a certain technique that tricks us into falling into sin, step by step persuades us not to do a good deed, or to commit a bad deed. Example being the Fajar salah, shaytan does not whisper to us and say do not wake up for fajar that wouldn't work, as you have all mentioned he has had years of experience so instead he whispers, "don't worry wake up in 10 minutes fajar time is long", so then you press the snooze button and dose back to sleep, after 10minutes the alarm for fajar goes again and then he whispers "you have plenty of time go back to sleep there's plenty of time to pray fajar", so then you fall back to sleep, and then before you know it you wake up and it's light outside, and shaytan has accomplished his mission you missed fajar salah yet again.
