"Girl Talk"

Assalaamu Alaykum,

When we hear the phrase "girl talk", young teens sitting around a campfire, talking about their middle school crushes may come to mind. [and yes, you may have a different image; its ok] But this type of talk often finds itself in groups of older girls, girls who are practicing in their deen, etc. My question is, what is the ruling on the permissibility of discussing specific non-mahrams between girls, in the common sense of the phrase "girl talk".

Disclaimer: I realize that "boy talk" exists too.

You mean is it ok to talk about specific guys? Gosip about them? Talk about how you like them without the purpose of wanting to find out if they are available for marriage?

Yes, thats sort of what I'm referring to. And with regards to 'practicing', I mean, they pray 5 times a day, are muhajjabaat, volunteer in their community. But this issue can also come up with sisters that are less aware of their deen...sisters of the younger crowd. Is is permissible in either group?
