Nutmeg!

I just found out today that nutmeg may be haram! Apparently it has intoxicating properties if taken in large amounts. I've grown up using nutmeg in certain dishes and its really bothering me. Most of the opinions i've seen online say that its haram due to what intoxicates in large amounts is still haram in small amounts, but some say that in small amounts its OK.

Sheikh Yasir can you please shed some light on this?

When you say 'intoxicating' do you mean it makes someone drunk/high? Or, is it poisonous?

It makes you high. some sites said that it makes you feel like your high and drunk at the same time. but like all drugs it is poisonous and can cause death if taken in large quantities.

after thinking about it for a while, it doesn't make much sense, since there are tons of other things if taken in excess than normal can make you sorta high, like poppy seeds, coffee etc.

Guess i'll just have to ask in Precious Provisions this summer iA if i don't get a definite answer here! :D

This is one of those areas where we will find some scholars being strict and others being lax.

In this case, personally I tend to follow those scholars who look at the overall usage of the material. As far as I know, this spice is not consumed to intoxicate, as it can have very severe side effects and it is much easier to 'get high' on other substances. Therefore everyone uses nutmeg for spice and not for intoxication.

Hence, small quantities of this spice in food would not be sufficient to intoxicate, even if large quantities of food were consumed. And since the spice is not najas, there is no harm in buying it and using it to flavor food.
