BASICS OF DU'A - PART 1
Assalamu Alaikum,
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.
I contribute to this thread with the help of the words of Tamir Abu As-Su’ood.
May Allah (swt) guide us all in righteousness and reward everyone who contributes to educating themselves and others by visiting this thread.
After our salaat, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) described du’a or supplication as “the best form of worship” (Sunan At-Tirmithi). Why is this so? We humans only exist thanks to our Creator and Sustainer. In this dunia, we are here to serve Him and seek His happiness; we need Him, Allah (swt) does not need us. By making du’a, this shows human weakness and helplessness thus the need for our Creator. This is the basis of our acts of worship. Our Prophet (pbuh) said “Nothing is more honourable to Allah than du’a” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
As a Muslim, we should seek refuge from Allah (swt) in all situations regardless good or bad. In times of deepest despair, when it seems that no one is around to guide us or support us, know that Allah (swt) is here for us unconditionally. He will listen to us when we feel buried by our sins, when we’ve been wronged, or when the light guiding our path has dwindled to the diameter of a dime.
What is Du’a?
Du’a is often interchangeably used with the word supplication; Arabic means “calling”. As indicated above, making du’a is to show humility and asking Allah (swt) for help; we need Him.
“When My servants ask about Me, I am indeed close to them. I listen to the prayer of every supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to My call, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided to the right way.” (Al-Baqarah: 186)
Why Make Du’a?
1) Ask Allah for blessings/favours:
“And your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me, I will answer your call.” (Ghafir: 60)
2) Ask for forgiveness for your sins/bad deeds:
“And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins. And who can forgive sins other an Allah? And they do not persist knowingly in what they have done.” (Ali-‘Imran: 135)
3) Ask Allah to dispel our sufferings, alleviate tragedies, and remove hardship
“And whatever good you have, it is from Allah; and when harm touches you, to Him you cry for help.” (An-Nahl: 53)
4) Seek forgiveness, mercy and peace for the deceased. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “When a human being dies, the reward for his deeds is discontinued except for three things: an ongoing charity, knowledge that people continue to benefit from, and a righteous child who continues to pray for him/her.” (Sahih Muslim)
5) Seek Allah’s protection against all sorts of evils you may face and to ask Allah to grant you all kinds of good that your heart desires.

(my crude translation)
O'Allah I ask you of all the goodness, (of now and later of what I know and what i dont know), O' Allah and I seek refuge from all harm/evil, (of now and later of what I know and what i dont know). O'Allah I ask you Paradise and all that brings me closer to it from speech or action and seek refuge from hellfire and that which brings me closer to it in speech or action. O'Allah I ask you of the best from which your slave and messenger, Muhammad (saw) has asked of you, and I seek refuge from the worst of what your slave and messenger, Muhammad (saw) has asked of you. And ya Allah I ask of the sweet pleasure to see your face, and the longing desire to meet you

Du’a for Laziness and Incapability (http://www.ilmfruits.com/dua-for-laziness-and-incapability)
The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to make a du’a: اللّهُمَّ إنِّي أعُوذُبِكَ مِن العَجزِ وَ الكَسلٍ
Transliteration: Allahumma inniy a’oothubika min al-ajzi wal-kasli
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in you from incapability and laziness (http://www.ilmfruits.com/dua-for-laziness-and-icapability).
Why is this du’a important? For two reasons:
Laziness is an attribute of munafiqeen. If this wasn’t bad enough, being lazy (http://www.ilmfruits.com/dua-for-laziness-and-icapability) leads to procrastination, which leads to its own set of problems.
It’s common these days for people to say “I can’t do it.” Like “I can’t pray at work,” or “I can’t achieve X.” The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say a’oothubillah to that kind of talk. Think about it!
Action Plan:
Memorize this du’a and make it every day in your sujood in every salaah. You have the Arabic, transliteration, and translation–you have no excuse not to do it!
Share your tips. What other tips and tricks do you use to overcome laziness and procrastination? Let us know in the comments!

my all time fav dua is the last ayah of Surat Al-Baqarah:
286. Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maula (Patron, Suppor-ter and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
and i'm not just sayin that cuz were taking surat al-baqarah lol. There's actually alotta virtue behind readin this dua..this website explains it pretty good.. http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=210527

Rabbij-'alnii muqii-mas-Salaati wa min zurriyyatii, Rabbanaa wa taqabbal Du-'aaa
My Rabb! make me steadfast in Salat and from my offspring; our Rabb! and accept my prayer. (14:40)
Prophet Ibrahim (pbh) was gifted with two sons in his old age, Isma'il and Is-haq. As a parent, he supplicated to Allah (swt) to make him steadfast in his salat. He also asked to make his offspring steadfast in their salat. Although we may be offering our salat sincerely, it remains with Allah (swt) to accept our salat. This supplication also begs that Allah (swt) may not reject our salat. If Allah (swt) wills, He will reward us for our attempt in making a salat.

Such a simple du'a but ever so powerful.
I make this dua at least once a day (some days once after every prayer!) to ask forgiveness for the smallest of sins; ones that we may not be aware of having committed - knowingly or unknowingly, in the past or in the future, and intentionally or unintentionally.
1476. Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) used to supplicate: "Allahumm-aghfir li khati'ati, wajahli, wa israfi fi amri, wa ma Anta a`lamu bihi minni. Allahumm-aghfir li jiddi wa hazli, wa khata'i wa `amdi, wa kullu dhalika `indi. Allahumm-aghfir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu, wa ma a`lantu, wa ma Anta a`lamu bihi minni. Antal-Muqaddimu, wa Antal-Mu'akhkhiru; wa Anta `ala kulli shai'in Qadir (O Allah! Forgive my errors, ignorance and immoderation in my affairs. You are better aware of my faults than myself. O Allah! Forgive my faults which I committed in seriousness or in fun deliberately or inadvertently. O Allah! Grant me pardon for those sins which I committed in the past and I may commit in future, which I committed in privacy or in public and all those sins of which You are better aware than me. You Alone can send whomever You will to Jannah, and You Alone can send whomever You will to Hell-fire and You are Omnipotent).''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Commentary: The Prophet (PBUH) was sinless but still he prayed earnestly to Allah for the forgiveness of his shortcomings. In fact, he did so to educate his followers. This prayer is an expression of one's utter humbleness and sincere repentance of sins.

Since its Yawmal Jommah!
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wa salat wa salam ala Rasulullah
Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.”
[Abu Dawud]
And Prophet Nuh alayhi salam says to his people in Surah Nuh, v. 10-12:
“I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance. And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.’”

BASICS OF DU'A - PART 2
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Proper Etiquette for Making Du’a:
1) Begin your du’a with praising Allah (swt) and sending peace and blessings to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
2) Begin your du’a by saying:
“La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min al-thalimeen” (Al-Anbiya’: 87)
“Oh Allah, there is no god but You, Glorified be You, I have been truly of the wrongdoers”
3) Show humility and the need of Allah
4) Repeat the du’a three times
5) Make du’a in the state of wudu
6) If you intend to make du’a for others, begin with making du’a for yourself
7) Face the qiblah (direction of prayer)
What is the Best Time to Make Du’a?
Du’a can be made at any time, however, there are optimum times in which they are more likely to be accepted; listed are a few common examples:
1) On the night of qadr: any of the odd nights of the last 10 nights of the month of Ramadan
2) On the last third of every night: Allah (swt) descends to the lowest heaven to bestow His favours, fulfill people’s needs, and relieve their distress
3) When making sujood (prostration): a servant in this position is closest to his Lord
4) Between athan and iqamah
5) After obligatory prayers
6) When rain falls
7) On drinking zamzam water with sincere intention
8) At a certain hour on Friday: Undetermined but most authentic view says the last hour before sunset; others say while the khutbah is delivered or when salaat is performed
9) When hearing a rooster crow, as he sees an angel
10) When the sun has passed its zenith and before zuhr (noon) prayer
11) When going to bed: after du’a say:
“La ilaha ill-Allah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”
“There is no god but Allah; Allah is Greatest; and there is no power or strength except through Allah”
12) When visiting the sick: angels will ‘Ameen’ after each du’a the visitor makes
13) When travelling
14) When making du’a for someone that is not present at the time of you saying the du’a; angels will reply “same to you” after each du’a you make for him/her
15) When being struck by a calamity or a disaster
16) When breaking your fast

I will have to find the source for this dua, but I did hear one of our local Ullema mention this dua:
La illaha illa Allah, wahdahoo la shareeka la, lahoo almulk, wa lahoo alhamd, biyadehe al-khair uh-yee wa u-meet wa hoowa al-hayo al-lathee la yamoot, wa hoowa a'la kul shaain qadeer.

I have a request from all the brothers and sisters who are posting du'as here on this thread. Can you all please mention along with your du'a where you got it from, like if it is from a verse in the Quran, or an authentic hadith, or just a regular du'a that is not in any verses of hadiths, and if you can reference the ones from Quran and hadith so we can look them up or find them, that would be great.

Supplication for sacrifice
Transliteration:
'Inna salaatee wa nusukii wa mah-yaaya wa mamaatee lil-laahi Rabbil-'aalamiin.
Laa shareeka lah: wa bizaa-lika 'umirtu wa 'ana 'awwa-lul- muslimeen.
Meaning:
Surely my Salat and my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for the sake of Allah- Rabb of all the worlds. No partners has He; and thus I am commanded, and I am the foremost of the Muslims. (6:163-164)
Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) was instructed to make this supplication in Surah Al-An'am. In the Holy Qur-an, there are several supplications which were mentioned as made by prophets and believers. There are also some supplications which are taught by Allah Himself. This is one of such supplications, being taught by Allah to our dear Rasul (PBUH). In two verses, this supplication encompasses every aspect of our life.
Supplication for truth
Transliteration:
Rabbih-kum bil-haqq! Wa rabbunar-rahmanul musta-'aanu 'aala maa tasifoon.
Meaning:
My Rabb! You decide with truth. And our Rabb is the Rahman whose help is invoked against what you attribute. (21:112)
Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) made this supplication as mentioned in Surah Al-Anbiya'. This supplication confirms Allah as the ultimate Judge of truth and that He alone will protect us against blasphemies uttered by non-believers.

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6036/1070/1600/dua1.png

Meaning:
O Allaah, make my love for You the most beloved thing to me, and my fear for You the most fearful thing to me, and remove from me all worldly needs and wants by instilling a passion for meeting You, and when You have given the people of the world the pleasures of their world, make the coolness of my eyes (pleasure) in worshipping You.

Bismillahir Ramanir Raheem,
BASICS OF DU'A - PART 3
What are the Signs of the Acceptance of Du’a?
The answering of du’a is not only in the form of fulfilling what has been asked for.
There are 3 types of responses:
1) Fulfillment of need
2) Postponing of the desire or reward until the Day of Judgment
3) Adverting an equivalent amount of evil that might harm him/her
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Any Muslim who makes du’a containing nothing that is sinful or that which involves breaking kinship ties, will be given for it by Allah one of three things: He will give him swift answer, or store it up for him in the next world, or turn away from him an equivalent amount of evil.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)
What Factors May Delay the Response to Du’a?
1) Praying to other than Allah: Always ask Allah directly – no intermediaries
“When My servants ask about Me, I am indeed close to them, I listen to the prayer of ever supplicant when he calls upon Me.” (Al-Baqarah: 186)
2) Being heedless while making du’a: Collect your heart, stay focused, and consciously think of the One you are calling upon.
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “You should know that Allah does not answer the du’a that comes from a heedless heart.” (Sunan At-Tirmithi)
3) Lack of sincerity to Allah: Always make du’a sincerely
“Call then upon Allah with sincere devotion to Him.” (GHafir: 14)
4) Doubting Allah’s response: Put your trust in Allah and be sure of His response
Our Prophet (pbuh) taught: “Make du’a while being certain of the response.” (Sunan At-Tirnithi)
5) Showing impatience: Never be hasty while making du’a nor stop making du’a because you do not get a response
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The du’a of anyone of you may be answered as long as he does not show impatience by saying, ‘I prayed to Allah but my prayers have not been answered.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
6) Earning haram (unlawful) income: Make sure your income is earned with hala (lawful) resources, otherwise your du’a will be rejected.
7) Praying for sin: Avoid prayers that involve sin, especially severing kinship ties
8) Aggression: Prayers for something unattainable-eternal life, shouting and screaming, or praying for something unacceptable-becoming a prophet, etc.
Allah says: “pray to your Lord with humility and in secret, for He does not like the aggressors.” (Al-A’raf: 55)
9) Holding a negative role in society: To fail to promote good and discourage evil; one main characteristic of the Muslim ummah.
Our Prophet (pbuh) cautioned: “By Him in whose hand is my soul, you must enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, or Allah will certainly soon send down upon you punishment from Himself. Then you will pray to Him and He will not answer (your supplication).” (Sunan At-Tirmithi).
10) Disregarding obligation: Do not let du’a distract you from performing an obligation that is due at the moment, such as salaat.

Assalam Alaikum
JazakAllah for this info.
one clarification, by "delay" of response it means not answered, because if you are committing shirk by calling on someone other than Allah, or if you are asking for something sinful, then Allah will not answer your du'a, not just delay the response.

BASICS OF DU'A - PART 4
Whose Du’a is Most Likely to be Answered?
1) Someone who has been wronged or persecuted
2) A fasting person at the time of breaking fast
3) The righteous parent for his child
4) The righteous children for his/her parents after they have passed away
Can du’a be Made in English?
A concept oft misconceived if that du’a must be made in Arabic. Although this is the language of the Qur’an and the most blessed language, there is no given condition in which du’a must be made in Arabic. Allah (swt) created us and our languages, therefore he can be approached in the language the supplicant understands most and masters. Having said so, in no way does this take away the importance of learning Arabic.
Shaykh-il-Islam Ibn Taymiyah says: “It is permissible to make du’a in Arabic and in languages other than Arabic as well. Allah knows the supplicant’s intention and wishes, no matter what language he/she speaks, because He recognizes all voices in all different languages, asking for all kinds of needs.” (Majmoo’ Al-Fatawa, vol. 22, p. 488-489).

2) A fasting person at the time of breaking fast
.
Assalam Alaikum
Just an important note that the hadith which says the fasting person's du'a at the time of breaking the fast is accepted is a Weak hadith, however, there is another authentic hadith that says the fasting person's du'a is accepted until he breaks his fast, meaning in general and any time during the day when the person is fasting his/her du'a is accepted and not just when breaking their fast.

Akhee, thanks for informing everyone of the hadith, but please let me know what that hadith is daef and why isnt the isnand strong?
This is the Weak hadith: "A fasting person, upon breaking his fast, has a supplication that will not be rejected"
As for why it is Weak, well because the scholars of hadith such as Ibn Al-Qayyim and Al-Albani have classified it as such. If you are asking for the details of why it is weak, then that needs a longer discussion, but the gist of it is that there is an unknown man called Is-haq ibn Ubaidillah Almadani in the chain of narration of that hadith, and that man is not known as Almunziri said in his book Altargheeb. Therefore the hadith is classified as weak.
However, there is the following hadith which is authentic:
"Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah): the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler." (Classified as Sahih by Sheikh Al-Albani in Silsilah Sahiha)
So the du'a of a fasting person is accepted any time during the day when he/she is fasting, and it is not limited to the time when breaking the fast.

JazakALLAH khair Akhee. I understand that you are speaking out of your knowledge mashALLAH. It would be easier for us if you could give referance to the books etc where the shcolars of Hadith have clearly stated that this is da'eef , hassan, etc...
Sorry but i hope you understand what i mean... It would be easier for others to believe if they checked for themselves instead of listening to x,y,z stating this is etc etc on a forum.

I am glad that you ask brother, because following others blindly is not good, and you should always ask for proofs and references, especially since a lot of people, including some shuyukh, narrate fabricated ahadith and some even lie and say that the (fabricated) hadith they are relating is Sahih, and some even go as far as saying that it is in Bukhari when in reality if you go check it out you will not find it in Bukhari. May Allah protect us from the liars.
As for the hadith that is classified as Sahih by Sheikh Al-Albani, it is in Silsilah Sahiha, volume 4, hadith # 1797. And the first hadith which is weak, it has been classified as Weak by Sheikh Al-Albani in Da'if Ibn Majah, hadith # 387.

InshAllah, tomorrow will mark the conclusion of the 1st week of Ramadan 2009. I hope we have all taken advantage of the time that Allah(swt) has blessed us with. One of the actions that is most loved to Allah(swt) is being in the position of sujood. It is by far the most humbling action that servant of Allah can perform. Along with sujood, we are encouraged to extend our sujoods by reciting duas, as we all know that duas are the weapons of a believer.
Our beloved Prophet(pbuh) has taught us, the ever so Merciful Creator descends to the lowest heavens during the early morning hours looking for servants of his who are asking for forgiveness. This is an optimal time to make dua. So, inshAllah lets all learn the beautiful dua below, which was recited by our father Adam(pbuh) who repented to Allah(swt) before he was sent to Earth.
Rabbana zhalamna taghfirlana wa 'allimtalana wa laqoonanna minal khaasireen.
They said: Our Lord! We have been unjust to ourselves, and if Thou forgive us not, and have (not) mercy on us, we shall certainly be of the losers.

Du'as for Fasting
When breaking the fast- Iftar
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu [wa 'alayka tawakkaltu] wa 'ala rizq-ika aftarthu
O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You [and I put my trust in You] and I break my fast with Your sustenance
["wa 'alayka tawakkaltu" is quoted in some books of knowledge - but not all, hence it is in brackets]
[abu Dawud]
dhahabadh-dhama'u wab-tallatil 'urūūqi, wa thabatal arju inshaAllah
The thrist is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is confirmed, if Allah [Ta'ala] Wills
[abu Dawud 2:306]
Allaahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika al-lati wasi'at kulli shay’in an taghfira li
O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me.
[a du'a that Abdullah ibn Amar (radiAllahu anhu) used to say when breaking his fast - as reported by Ibn abi Mulaykah (radiAllahu anhu)]
When someone offers you food when you are fasting and you decline
When you are invited to eat, then reply to the invitation. if you are fasting, then invoke Allah's blessings (on your host), and if you are not fasting then eat
[Muslim; 2:1054]
Upon reaching month of Rajab and Sha'ban
When the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) sighted the moon of Rajab (two months before Ramadan) he used to pray to Allah in the following words:
اَللّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِى رَجَبَ وَ شَعْبَانَ وَ بَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَان
Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha'ban wa ballighna Ramadan
O Allah! Make the months of Rajab and Sha'ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings)
[Narrated by at-Tabarani and Ahmad]
When you are fasting, and someone is rude to you
Inni sa'iimu, inni sa'iimu
I am fasting, I am fasting
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Fath al-Bari of Al-Asqalani; 4:1-3, Muslim; 2:806]
Upon Sighting of the new Moon
Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-imaani, was-salaamati, wal-Islami, wat-tawfeeqi lima tuhibbu Rabbana wa tardha. Rabbuna wa RabbukAllahu
Allah is the Greatest. O Allah bring us the new moon with security and faith, with peace and in Islam, and in harmony with what our Lord Loves and what pleases Him. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah
[at-Tirmidhi 5:504, ad-Darimi 1:336]
Upon seeing the first dates of the season
Allahumma barik lana fi thamarina, wa barik lana fi madinatina, wa barik lana fi saa'ina, wa barik lana fi muddina
O Allah! Bless us in our dates, and bless us in our town, bless us in our saa' and in our Mudd'
(saa' and Mudd' are dry measures used for agricultural produce by the Arabs in the Prophet's time)

O all Glorious, All Holy one, Our lord and the Lord of the Angels, And the soul.
There is no God but You, Forgive us, Grant us Paradise, and save us from (hell) fire.
Upon breaking the fast in someone's home

On Lailatul Qadr - the Night of Power
Aishah (radhiya Allahu Ta'ala anha), that she said: "O Messenger of Allah! What if I knew which night Lailatul-Qadr was, then what should I say in it?" He said 'Say

Assalam alaikum,
This dua is found in sura 18 verse 10. Our Noble Prophet(pbuh) encouraged us to read sura kahf every Friday.
How befitting is this dua, especially for our community!
Behold, the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said, "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way!"

My favourite du'aa: (2:284-286)
"284: To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth and whether you disclose what is in your own selves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom he wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
285: The Messenger believes in what has been sent down from His Lord and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books and His Messengers. (They say) "We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)."
286: Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets rewarded for that (good) which he has earned and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. And Pardon us. And Grant us Forgiveness Have Mercy on us. You are our Maula (Protector) so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

The Prophet said "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana 'ala ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min Sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u Laka bini'matika 'alaiya, wa Abu Laka bidhanbi faghfirli innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta." The Prophet added. "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise."
