i am sorry if this is not an appropriate question.

i am trying to convince myself why i should go to ilm summit. i looked at the ilm summit curriculum and it seems that most of the stuff is already covered in previous classes or will be taught in future almaghrib seminars.

like fiqh of siyam in rizq management, balagh in divine speech, asma wa sifaat in light upon light, and the deviant sects in Aqeedah 401/501 etc

i understand its really good stuff at ilm summit, but giving away all my paid vacation days and the money ... is it worth it when i know that this was/will be covered in the almaghrib seminar; studying them in the regular weekend seminar seems more suitable/convinient to me. is ilm summit designed for college students in their summer holidays alone?

so please help me understand about this. i am sorry again, if this is not an appropriate question.

Actually, it is a wise question to ask! I went last year, and some thing I noticed that if there is overlap with AlMaghrib seminars, the discussion covers some deep details that simply can't be discussed over a weekend.

Also, even if you have already covered something on the curriculum, watch how they teach it. It'll make your job much easier when you convey to others (IlmSummit wants community-focused people).

Lastly, you are in great company for 2 weeks. Seeing them will remind how much good the Ummah has and make you re-examine yourself.

At the end, what matters is not if it's good for you, but if it's the best thing for you right now. If you find better, go for it!

Although I didn't go last year, my siblings who went shared with me their experiences and they had so much fun and learned so much.

I want to share with you why I am going to Ilm Summit this year:

1-Knowledge (yes some material maybe covered in AlMaghrib seminars but the topics here are much more detailed, you have more time to comprehend and ask questions regarding the topics, and there are some sessions that are Ilm Summit exclusive---Torch Bearers Version II or even the fun wildcard sessions)

2-Sisterhood/Brotherhood (you'll meet some of the most outstanding, righteous sisters/brothers from around the world, people who will pull you to become a better person)

3-Noble cause (traveling, paying the money, leaving your family, all of these hardships are done for a noble cause--learning the deen of Allah. I'm sure you know that seeking knowledge is amongst the most noble actions in Islam and traveling to do you'll get so much ajr bi'thni Allah. And even better there will be angels who are asking for Allah to forgive you for two whole weeks..wow now put a price on that ;) )

4-Putting on the shoes of a scholar (You know all those stories of the scholars who traveled to obtain knowledge that we heard in Torch Bearers or anyother lecture. Well, here's the time to see how they felt--even though a five star hotel is nothing compared to conditions they had it---but still there are hardships you have to go thru just like they did.)

5-Seeking the pleasure of Allah SWT (Afterall isn't our purpose in life to be obedient, worship and please our Creator. By undertaking this trip, with sincere intentions, will be a way that you can strive and attain the pleasure of your Rab. There is a hadith that states whomever Allah wants good for He will make him more knowledgeable of the deen.

So here are the reasons I can think of, but always make istikhara and dua. Sometimes we might not see the good in something but just trust in Allah and you will have no regrets as Allah's wisdom and knowledge transcends ours.

May Allah make your decision easy.

ps sorry I had to edit my post intially I thougth you were a sister, sorry

Assalama 'Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

There is an article on MM speaking of Ilmsummit titled Banquet Speeches From Ilmsummit 2008 Reading and seeing some of the important aspects mentioned in there might be an insentive or a motivation for someone trying to decide. Allahu A3lam.

Wa'alaykuma Salam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

I would like to add my 2 cents for why you MUST attend IlmSummit.

As you might have noticed, AlMaghrib Seminars are usually watered down content for general public. The standard is very dilute and generally aimed to create awareness in public. The Madina University, for instance, has a very high standard (no comparison at all). I might say IlmSummit is somewhere in the middle between these two, very technical and high in standard.

At IlmSummit, you can get, may I say, uncensored content. In a regular seminar, I noticed that Shuyookh usually try to be politically correct and take many precautions as the audience come from different backgrounds, and who knows may be even govt folks. But at IlmSummit shuyookh are all open without any fear. Also the students in IlmSummit, for the most part, strongly adhere to Ahlus Sunnah principles, which might not be the case with the regular AlMaghrib Seminar audience. This gives additional freedom for the shuyookh to play with.

As for Fiqh asSiyaam, in Rizq Management, I remember it was a very basic level course and it didn't satisfy my hunger. InshaAllah, at ilmSummit, we are going to study this in extreme detail and hopefully will satisfy my thirst.

Lastly, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi mentioned in last year's IlmSummit, that a student of knowledge has to study the same topic under many shuyook to get different perspectives. Just studying a topic once in aAlMaghrib seminar and then forgetting about it is not typically a style of a serious student of knowledge.

I personally asked Br.Nauman about his Balagh series at IlmSummit, and he said that it is going to be complete different from the Divine Speech on Balagh seminar, in the sense, he is going to cover hardcore technical stuff on Balagh.

So don't wait and apply for IlmSummit right now.

Wallahu Aalam.
