Salaam Alaikum,

There is an Indian jewelry design called the Temple design. It's called 'Temple' because the design is inspired by the architecture of temples. Is it permissible for Muslims to wear jewelry of such designs?

This is a very good question but a very Fiqhi question. I suggest contacting your local imam and scholars of knowledge.

Out of curiosity, does the jewelery design have temple on it ? also do you have a picture of those designs ?

Out of curiosity, does the jewelery design have temple on it ? also do you have a picture of those designs ? Well, from my perspective, the overall design doesn't exactly look like a temple. Its sort of geometric. Yes I have pictures, but I think the style in my pictures is designer wear ;) ...i am worried that it might get 'stolen'...just like I "stole" it from a catalogue...lol. :) So I wont post them here.

I will try to get some pix of my mom's earrings. They're good too but not as good as the one's in my pictures. They're more like the classic gold type (I think)...

is the website templejewellery dot com?

Interesting question. I would think that we would have to see what the jewlery looks like. Unless there are distinct symbols of another religion I would think it would be ok, a masjid is a temple of the Muslims (Allah Alaam).

This question reminds me of the below fatwa I read awhile ago, though this question is slightly different.

Is it permissible to plant and eat a lettuce called “iceberg lettuce trinity” because of its name?
I am a farmer who plants lettuce, I have recently found out that a lettuce variety which is very common in my land carries the title "iceberg lettuce trinity".

Praise be to Allaah.

Lettuce is a kind of plant that it is permissible to eat. Allaah has blessed us with good food that He has created and brought forth for us from the earth. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and good on the earth, and follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan). Verily, he is to you an open enemy”

[al-Baqarah 2:168]

“O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah — Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allaah, if it is indeed He Whom you worship”

[al-Baqarah 2:172]

The permissibility with regard to these things that we are permitted to grow and eat has nothing to do with the names that people give to them, because the names come from these people, each according to his environment and language.

Based on that, the fact that this is called “iceberg lettuce trinity” does not make it haraam to grow it or eat it, even though in our research we did not find out who gave this name to it. Whatever the case, even if the word trinity in the name is a religious name connected to deviant Christianity, it does not affect the fact that it is permissible.

Well...the story is...someone bought that catalogue from India--it has some very artistic and unique designs, I must add. The catalogue had a number you could call if you were interested in making an order. I had called the number twice; turned out their customer service isn't good. They said they would call me back with the pricing but they never did (too bad their loss!). So i scanned the picture from their catalogue and inshaAllah am planning on getting it custom made elsewhere (if its all halaal to wear). That's why I called it "stolen". :) That's not really stealing, though.

Yes the catalogue is public...but I think that design is uncommon. When I usually come across temple jewelry it usually has an 'all gold make'--yello gold from all sides!!!...this one doesn't. I usually find 'all gold' designs sort of boring. I'm sort of worried the design might get too common if i expose it too much...(I'll risk getting bored by it too and might have to put a lot of effort in finding another one) So, I'm sort of hesitant to post! lol.http://forums.almaghrib.org/images/icons/icon12.gif
If you REALLY wanna see it, I don't mind posting...I'll remove it after you're done checkin it out.

PS: My mom's earrings have a similar design but they are all gold--still pretty though.

I am a farmer who plants lettuce, I have recently found out that a lettuce variety which is very common in my land carries the title "iceberg lettuce trinity".That's an interesting way of naming lettuce, I must say...but I think there is a difference. Lettuce is designed by Allah where as 'Temple Design' was mostly developed by Hindu humans. I actually just found this info upon some googling...

Indian jewelry art is at times divided into three kinds - temple jewelry, spiritual jewelry and bridal jewelry. Temple jewelry of India initially used to be described as the jewelry used to adorn the idols of Gods and Goddesses. The statues In India were ornamented with chunky necklaces that were either strung with beads or crafted with intricate filigree. Amongst the other ornaments that adorned statues of deities were large chunky bangles, usually studded with gems. In addition, earrings, nose rings and anklets were also used.

The jewelry used to adorn the idols was later worn by temple dancers and slowly, the designs became a part of the Indian woman's bridal jewelry trousseau. Though the idols continued to be decorated with jewelry, a practice seen even today, the jewelry of Indian women also came be made on the pattern. Today, temple jewellery has become open of the most popular crafts of India. During festivals and occasions of worship of Gods, women wear temple jewelry, believed to be auspicious and offer good luck.

Jewelry items like pendants, bracelets, belts and brooches based on temple jewelry are very popular amongst women, during auspicious times, and wearing these is believed to bring fortuity to the person. The favorite design for pendants is that of Ganesha - the elephant headed godknown to bestow good luck and good fortune. The other emblem, which is also, very much in demand, is that of the sacred syllable OM. These days, the temple jewelry of India is finding a flavor amongst foreigners too.
