Of the fears of Sufyaan ath Thawree (Rahimahullah), was dying in the a state of rejecting the sunnah of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala).
Reminds me of the way Umar (radi Allahu anh) would question Hudhaifa (radi Allah anh) about being amongst the hippocrites, but we know He was a sahabah and was given the glad tidings of paradise in his lifetime yet He still feared for his rejection of Islam from within.

If you do not understand the sunnah, the issue is upon you and not upon what has been passed down from generation to generation and pristinely preserved. Give it the weight it weight it deserves, and if that were to be done in it's highest state, narrating a hadith would be no light matter.

Only the ones who knew the weight of the sunnah such that it was clearly visible in their mannerisms passed Imam Malik's (rahimahullah) "test" for being someone whom could teach his students. Shows how much the Imam cared that his students learned from the select few that understood perspective of the sunnah in Islam.

Abundant are those who know much of knowledge, and few are those who understand it's respect.

Allah chose the companions from ALL aspects of life in learning from their examples, they were human, they made errors, but as a collective group they are praised by Allah. It is a lofty status that even the scholars who came later did not gain from Allah, despite that there are scholars who were more knowledgeable about Islam or more ascetic than some of the sahabah. Perspective is key in that they were praised as a collective group and not as individuals, except those narrations which are specific in regards to that. In follwing their examples and opinions, it also must be done as a collective effort, (again with the exceptions that are clear in regards to that).

Ibn 'Umar reported that Prophet [sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, "Do not stop them." He became very angry. He said, "I'm telling you the Prophet [sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam] said not to & you say you will do it, surely I will not speak to you again." He did not speak to him until he died.
