Fast of Dawood OK?

Asalamu alaykum wr wb,

This is a question that came to my mind. I know/heard of the hadith that states the fast of dawood is the best, that he used to fast one day and not the next.

However, is this allowed for this ummah? Because I also heard hadith that say it is impermissible to fast on Friday alone, and someone mentioned but I don't remember Saturday alone also. So if you think about doing the fast of Dawood 2 weeks in duration or even the first week, a person would fast on a Friday in between two break days, and the same would happen on a Saturday; meaning fasting on a Friday alone and/or Saturday alone.

I am just wondering.

Asalamu alaykum wr wb

I'd really like an answer to this also. Its always bothered me. I also just heard that fasting on Saturdays is not recommended. Say one wants to fast three days a week and decides that Mondays and Thursdays are definately doable, what would be the 3rd day?
JazakAllah khairaan.

Ayam al beed are 3 days - 13th..14th..15th of each Islamic month. As to which is better Monday and Thursdays of each week or Ayam Al beed. If you calculate 2 days a week x 4 weeks is 8 days. And ayam al beed is only 3 days for the month. Thus from the above calculation 8 days is better than 3. You are allowed to fast as Dawood
Alyahi Salaam has fasted except for the days of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha and the 3 days of Hajj (11,12 and 13th day of Hajj).

If you refer to the Muwatta of Imam Malik.. the people of Madinah had no objection on fasting on fridays.

"I have not heard a single person from among people of knowledge and learning, and those who are their followers forbid people from fasting on Fridays. And [in my opinion] fasting on this day is a good deed. I have seen certain men of erudition fast on this day and regard it as desirable" (Mua‘tta; Bab Jami‘ al-Siyam)

As for Hanafi Scholars..

As for voluntary fasts on Friday: they are not only permitted, but recommended in both the Hanafi and Maliki schools. [Radd al-Muhtar, al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Bada’i` in Hanafi fiqh; Muwatta’, al-Muntaqa and Sharh al-Kabir in Maliki fiqh]
Imam al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him) said in his Durr al-Mukhtar, a top commentary in Hanafi fiqh,

“The recommended fasts are fasts such as those of the ‘white days’ [of the lunar month: 13, 14, 15] of each month, and Friday even on its own [f: without a day before or after it]…”

Hanbali and Shafi

It is mentioned in al-Fiqh alal-madhahib al-arbaah that it is disapproved to single out Fridays and Saturdays for fasting. So is fasting on the day of Now Ruz (Persian New Year - 21st March) in the opinion of all the schools except the Shafii, and fasting on the day or the two days just before the month of Ramadan.

Fasting Fridays Specifically..

“As for fasting Fridays specifically, despite the prohibition that has been transmitted – which is the Prophet’ saying (Allah bless him & give him peace), ‘Let none of you fast Friday, unless they fast a day before it or after it,’ – this is because the prohibition is understood to be out of the fear that it become obligatory. This possibility has ended after the passing away of the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace).” [Dasuqi, Hashiyat al-Dasuqi `ala al-Sharh al-Kabir, 1.534]

Re: Fast of Dawood OK?

Assalamu 'alaikum,

In Rizq Managament, the strongest opinion that was mentioned by Ustadh Muhammad was that it is Makrooh to fast on Fridays and Saturdays, if another day is not added to them.

He did not even hint at the supposed opinion of what Tazkiyah says. And the Amal of Madina is not an absolute principle as the majority disagree with it.

Br. Tazkiyah, with all due respect, if you want to post outside opinions, take the decency to post the views of the Shuyookh who teach the classes as well.

thank you,

Abdur-Rehman
