It was mentioned in The Code Evolved and again during the Fiqh of Love about people who like to ask "what if" questions. There was a certain land that was known for these type of questions and it would be said to "what if" questioners: "Go to the land of the what if"
Does anyone know what the term in Arabic is for the people of the what if questions? In English, I suppose one would say "What Iffers". |

Re: What Iffers?
Asalamu alaykum,
It was mentioned in the class in English. Some students made some suggestions but they were not the exact term Shaykh Yaser had in mind. He asked us to look up the name. |

Re: What Iffers?
the evolution of fiqh, by bilal phillips, pg 49
.....due to this group's support of extensive reasoning, they became known as ahl ar-rai [reasoning people]. the center of the ahl ar-rai scholars was kufah, in iraq. the fiqh of kufah developed along hypothetical lines. problems were invented and variations of existing situations guessed at, then imaginary solutions were worked out and recorded. in their discussions they often used the phrase, "what if it were like this?" and thus they were nicknamed the what-iffers. -- and Allah knows best

Re: What Iffers?
Asalamu alaykum,
May Allah reward you. Alhamdulillah, it is understood that the what-iffers are a group within ahl ar-rai as opposed to ahlul hadeeth. So the question remains how did the scholars term this particular subgrouping in Arabic?

Re: What Iffers?
Asslamalikum,
On a side note I thought it was really objective and open-minded as well as an open hand of unity for Almaghrib to include a the argument of following a madhab or not under the preparation for Code of Evolved section. http://www.almaghrib.org/prep_tce.php This was real important for many people (including myself) about the issue of objectivity. Inshallah will look forward to taking the class when it is offered. May Allah (SWT) unite us! |

Re: What Iffers?
The name of the group in Arabic is الأرأيتيَون or Al Ara-Aytiyyoon from the Arabic verb أرأيت...؟ which represents in Arabic the question they pose for "what if...?"
