Talking Selfish Reasons

Salam alaykum,

I keep hearing the reminder that whatever we do towards promoting AlMaghrib or for the Qabeelah, we are to make sincere dua and take our actions for the sake of Allah, for the cause of Allah. This is important of course.

Also what we do will have ultimate benefits in the Akirah, but it also benefits you here in the dunia.

I propose that we need to declare a completely dunia selfish reason along with our selfless reasons for the sake of Allah. This way it makes the work we do and our commitment appear more serious, longer lasting and effective in the here and now.

What are your selfish reasons for working with the Qabeelah and representing AlMaghrib? Are you meeting them?

Mine are: It gives me the chance to develope and prove the skills I am sure I have for outside sales and PR. It forces me to get out there in French (my second language) and increase my fluency without fear of failing.
It give me the chance to try on new jobs. It is all about my own personal developement--surely a beneficial thing for the cause of Allah as well! I am most certainly meeting them too.

And you?

Nancy B

Re: Selfish Reasons

I like to set things up such that if I die tomorrow, there are brothers who will continue my work. If there's something I have done before, I prefer to give someone else the opportunity to do it the next time, and then give them feedback on it.

It is selfish in that if I can pass on a skill to someone, perhaps I can get a small 'cut' of the reward anytime they do a righteous deed with that skill.

Re: Selfish Reasons

My selfish reason is to take the reward everyone else earns from the changes the classes make in their lives and benefit myself.

Re: Selfish Reasons

Thanks for your responses br. Siraaj and Yasser. I edited the original post for clarity. What I was looking at was some immediate benefit you will gain by working with the promotion tasks we do.

Yasser, you said that you like to pass a task you have already done before to another brother who has not so he can gain the experience you did, and you like to then offer beneficial critique afterwards. It sounds like working with AlMaghrib develops your leadership skills, helps you to become a positive influence in the community. This is great! AlHamdoulillahe. Continue the development in sha Allah because it will undoubtably prepare you for something that will come up in the future.

Siraaj, "taking the reward everyone else earnes from the benefits they get from the classes" is icing on the cake. It is just one of the beautiful benefits we get from doing good works and doing dawah. It is something Allah subhana wa t'ala bestows, or not, depending on our intension in the matter, or so I understand. You got something from the organising you did for Chicago, a real personal benefit. Your leadership skills were certainly augmented. Perhaps you addressed and over came a fear of some sort. In this way, AlMaghrib gives you a chance to face down your fears in real, practical, and safe situations. You experimented and won. Albeit with Allah t'ala's help and will.

Anyone else? What are your selfish reasons for working with the Qabeelah and representing AlMaghrib? Are you meeting them?

No doubt, it was a learning experience, but I didn't get into it for the learning experience. I only realized the lessons and their value towards the end of the initial work.

The only other selfish reason I can think of is that it's cheaper and more convenient to attend classes in Chicago than elsewhere for me

Re: Selfish Reasons

not to mention being with a good group of brothers...My situation I have good friends that i knew since high school..but they arent' into the deen..I just want to be around brothers that love it..It helps me belong and keeps me away from haram. Cause the influences of haram around me are great..and I'm always having to fight it by myself..when there's other brothers around..just them being there is enough support.
