BOC Notes for Session #6

Assalaamu'alaykum Warahmatulahee Wabarakatuhu,

A sister wanted me to post the notes that she took from the session held yesterday on Paltalk. May they be of benefit to all who read them. Ameen.

Surat albaqarah:

Ayaat 28- 34

y

2:28. How can ye reject the Faith In Allah.- seeing that ye were without life, and He gave you life; then will He cause you to die, and will again bring you to life; and again to Him will ye return.

Sensible reasoning: Live the life that Allah has given the way He wants you to live.

Allah gave us life when we were nothing:

Dead --> Life --> Death --> Life --> Judgment

76:1 Has there not been over man a long period of time, when He was nothing - (Not even) mentioned?
(Surat Ad-Dahr)

Also, if someone ever saves your life, you feel an absolute need to do anything you can to make up for it, to show your gratitude. But Allah not only keeps us alive, He is the one who gave us life. Further, he maintains your life.

u

2:29. It is He who hath created for you all things that are on earth; Moreover His design comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and of all things He hath perfect knowledge.

Everything is Halaal unless proven otherwise.

We learn from the verse that:

1)Everything has been created for us on earth.

2)Hadith: Whoever does something without our approval will have it rejected. (therefore, it is not permissible to add or subtract anything in Islam (worship) without Allah’s and His Messengers).

Allah rose over the heavens (in a manner that suits His Majesty).

Allah’s rising is not like what we think, it is not permissible to think/imagine it like ours because:

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ

there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things). [42:11]

samaa’: Heavens

There are seven heavens, one over the other as mentioned in the hadith about Isra’ wa-alMi’raj:

The Prophet said: “….Then I was taken up to the seventh heaven. Gabriel asked the (gate) to be opened. It was said: Who is he? He said: Gabriel It was said. Who is with thee? He replied: Muhammad (may peace be upon him.) It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. (The gate) was opened for us and there I found Ibrahim (Abraham peace be upon him) reclining against the Bait-ul-Ma'mur and there enter into it seventy thousand angels every day, never to visit (this place) again. Then I was taken to Sidrat-ul-Muntaha whose leaves were like elephant ears and its fruit like big earthenware vessels. And when it was covered by the Command of Allah, it underwent such a change that none amongst the creation has the power to praise its beauty.”
(Sahih Muslim: Book 001, Number 030)

Abdullah bin Nafi' reported: Malik bin Anas said: 'Allah is above the heavens, but His knowledge encompasses everything. Nothing escapes His knowledge.'

On the top of seven heavens is seat and above that is the throne and above is Allah.

Imam Maalik was asked how Allah rose over his throne, he became angry and said:

الاستواء معلوم والكيف مجهول والسؤال عنه بدعة
Him rising is know (to have taken place); how is not known; and asking is a bid’ah

Then he told people to kick him out of the Masjid

Sky- samawaat

Paradise- jannah

Allah is describing Himself as al-3aleem. This is the most commonly used name in the Qur’an.

It is probably mentioned in this ayah because Allah mentions the expanse of the heavens and then mentions how even then, He is able to know everything in that expanse.

GEM: Those who create a computer virus can remove it verily easily but other computer scientists will take a while to figure out where the problem lies and the way to erase it.

2:30. Behold, Thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."

1)where you are?

2)Where you want to go?

3)How to get to your target?

These ayaat describe you all these things. They tell us where we are coming from

It is narrated in the tafseer books that angel knew that human beings are going to spread mischief because the jinns were already there on the earth and they were spreading mischief so much so that one time there was an army of angels sent to fight against them and to teach them a lesson.

Angels:

1)They have intelligence

2)They are curious

3)They hate corruption

4)They ask for knowledge (not for arrogance)

The sunnah of Allah is that you are either going to go up or down. If you are not constantly improving, you will go down. We are on the mountain path.

The Creation of Adam:

Ibn Masud and other companions of the Prophet (PBUH) said that Allah the Almighty sent Gabriel onto the earth to said that Allah the Almighty sent Gabriel onto the earth to get Him clay therefrom. The earth said: "I seek refuge in Allah from your decreasing my quantity or disfiguring me." So Gabriel returned and did not take anything. He said: "My Lord, the land sought refuge in You and it granted."

So Allah sent Michael for the same purpose, and the land sought refuge with Allah and it was granted. So he went back and said to Allah what Gabriel has said before him.

Then Allah sent the Angel of Death, and the land sought refuge in Allah, the angel said: "I also seek refuge with Allah from returning without carrying out His command." So he took clay from the face of the earth and mixed it. He did not take from one particular place, but rather he took white, red, and black clay from different places.

The Angel of Death ascended with it, Allah soaked the clay till it became sticky. Then Allah said to the angels: "Truly, I am going to create man from clay. So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him." (Chapter 38:71-72 Quran).

So Allah shaped Adam into a human being, but he remained a figure of clay for 40 years. The angels went past him. They were seized with fear by what they saw, and Iblis felt fear most. He used to pass by the figure of Adam, buffeting it, which would make a sound like pottery. Allah told us: "He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like the clay of pottery." (Chapter 55:Quran).

(source: Ibn Katheer)

Hadith - Abu Dawood. Imam Ahmad has narrated from Abu Musa that the Prophet saLlaLlahu 'alayhi wasaLlam said:

"Allah has created Adam from a handful (soil) which He had gathered from all over the earth. That is how the children of Adam came according to the (colour and nature of the) earth. There are white among them, as well as red and black, and cross colours. There are those among them who are of bad nature and good nature, soft as well as harsh and in between".

Adam was created from clay all over the earth, that’s why, children of Adam are different: different color, size, shape, etc.

Sahih Muslim: Book 033, Number 6409:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying: There was argument between Adam and Moses. Moses said to Adam: You are our father. You did us harm and caused us to get out of Paradise. Adam said to him: You are Moses. Allah selected you (for direct conversation with you) and wrote with His own Hand the Book (Torah) for you. Despite this you blame me for an act which Allah had ordained for me forty years before He created me. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said:. This is how Adam came the better of Moses and Adam came the better of Moses.

We were supposed to be put on the earth, it is not right to complain or to blame it on the others.

Khalifah:

1)Leader for generations to come

2)successor

3)a generation that replaces one after the other.

In this verse, it means, a creation that procreates. We are not the successor of Allah, though…because Allah doesn’t need a successor.

z

2:31. And He taught Adam the nature of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: "Tell me the nature of these if ye are right."

Our knowledge consists of names. The science is basically naming process.

It is enough to show the virtue of knowledge that nobody likes to be called an ignorant.

There is a da’wah technique here:

A challenge is made basically to convey a point. If you’re truthful, just give me the names of these…it is like a rhetorical question.

(

2:32. They said: "Glory to thee, of knowledge we have none, save what Thou hast taught us: In truth it is Thou who art perfect In knowledge and wisdom."

The angels didn’t even bother to answer (because they knew they couldn’t)

GEM:if you are in an organization, if you don’t know anything, just admit it.

Everyone is a shepherd and will be asked about their flocks whether you like it or not.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Every one of you is a shepherd and everyone of you will be questioned about his flock.”

Someone might have knowledge but not wisdom so that cannot utilize it the right way. For instance; the act of saving a fish from drowning.

Fish don't need to be “saved” from water/drowning. So, if you just have knowledge you will try to save the fish in a flood, not realizing that fish’s habitat is water.

Wisdom and knowledge go hand in hand in the height of perfection.

2:33. He said: "O Adam! Tell them their natures." when He had told them, Allah said: "Did I not Tell you that I know the secrets of heaven and earth, and I know what ye reveal and what ye conceal?"

Allah is teaching through Adam. This is how Allah showed Adam’s superiority. Angels are metaphors for us, if something is not clear to us and is made clear by Allaah, we prostrate to HIM.

Also, this shows us a teaching technique of Allah, meaning a demonstration.

Al-Bukhari recorded from Ibn `Abbas that he said, "Umar used to bring me into the gatherings with the old men of (the battle of) Badr. However, it was as if one of them felt something in himself (against my attending). So he said, `Why do you (`Umar) bring this (youth) to sit with us when we have children like him (i.e., his age)' So `Umar replied, `Verily, he is among those whom you know. Then one day he called them and invited me to sit with them, and I do not think that he invited me to be among them that day except to show them. So he said, `What do you say about Allah's statement,

(When there comes the help of Allah and the Conquest.)' Some of them said, `We were commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when He helps us and gives us victory.' Some of them remained silent and did not say anything. Then he (`Umar) said to me, `Is this what you say, O Ibn `Abbas' I said, `No.'He then said, `What do you say' I said, `It was the end of the life of Allah's Messenger that Allah was informing him of. Allah said,

(When there comes the help of Allah and the Conquest.) which means, that is a sign of the end of your life.

(So, glorify the praises of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives.)' So, `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, `I do not know anything about it other than what you have said.

Taktumun: hiding

Intentions are hidden but only Allah knows the hidden intentions.

ø

2:34. And Behold, we said to the angels: "Bow down to Adam" and They bowed down. not so Iblis: He refused and was haughty: He was of those who reject Faith.

Notice how the angels prostrated immediately when they realized they were wrong, because we see the "fa" before the word. They didn't continue to argue like many people might do when proven wrong.

Before the decision is made, you should raise your concern, but Iblees objects once the decision is made, i.e. the command of Allah to prostrate.

"Ward off passing thoughts, for if you do not, they will become ideas. Ward off ideas, for if you do not, they will become desires. Fight them, for if you do not, they will become resolve and determination, and if you do not ward them off, they will become actions. If you do not resist them with their opposite, they will become habits and it will be difficult for you to get rid of them."

(Ibn al-qayyim)

GEM: A Muslim saw (beware of your thoughts, they can become your actions, etc) on a poster in a non-Muslim school--so it has even been spread to the non-Muslims.

18:50 Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam": They bowed down except Iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers!

You think you are superior. Mankind is also guilty of this and it is called racism.

[ Allah ] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?

GEM: we can never be truly original

All we have is based on our previous notions, experience and knowledge.

Iblees is denying that Allah is ‘aleem and hakeem. By not prostrating Adam, Iblees, in fact, refused to bow to Allah because obeying Allah’s command was an act of worship.

GEM: It's interesting that iblees believes in Allah subhanaHu wa ta3al - he's "smart" enough for that, but the atheists still deny a supreme power. Atheist they believe in first part of kalima - La ilaha. So they go to be convinced of the second part

Iblees was among the kuffaar but he hadn’t acted upon it. He finally allowed his thought to become his action, then he becomes kaafir.

Iblees was jealous of Adam. Iblees hit the body of Adam when the soul had not been breathed into him.

I wanted to point out that they were modified just now because some ayat had a missing letter towards the end, may Allah subhanaHu wa ta3ala forgive me. And all perfection is due to Him.

Surat albaqarah:

Dead --> Life --> Death --> Life --> Judgment
Sensible conclusion #1: Allah gave us life, so live it the way He wants us to (as mentioned above).
Sensible conclusion #2: Allah will resurrect and judge us on the Last Day, so live the way He wants us to.

Also, if someone ever saves your life, you feel an absolute need to do anything you can to make up for it, to show your gratitude. But Allah not only keeps us alive, He is the one who gave us life. Further, he maintains your life.
So it's like He's saving your life again and again every single moment. So take the sense of debt and gratitude we feel towards someone who saves our life once, and multiply it by infinity. That's what we owe Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.

2:29. It is He who hath created for you all things that are on earth; Moreover His design comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and of all things He hath perfect knowledge.
The above translation is a perfect example of how we SHOULDN'T understand the word "istiwa". Istiwa doesn't mean He "comprehended" the heavens. It means He rose above, as the sister explains in the following notes.

Quote:

1)Everything has been created for us on earth.

samaa’: Heavens

Gem: Ibrahim (alaihi as-salaam) led a life of non-stop trials and tribulation. In the heavens, he is described as leaning against the Bait-ul-Ma'mur. Finally, in the Heavens he has found rest. Our rest is in jannah, in sha Allah.

Quote:

Abdullah bin Nafi' reported: Malik bin Anas said: 'Allah is above the heavens, but His knowledge encompasses everything. Nothing escapes His knowledge.'

On the top of seven heavens is seat and above that is the throne and above is Allah.
By "seat" I believe she means "kursi" which is understood to be a foot stool.

Quote:
Imam Maalik was asked how Allah rose over his throne, he became angry and said:

Allah is describing Himself as al-3aleem. This is the most commonly used name in the Qur’an.

It is probably mentioned in this ayah because Allah mentions the expanse of the heavens and then mentions how even then, He is able to know everything in that expanse.

GEM: Those who create a computer virus can remove it verily easily but other computer scientists will take a while to figure out where the problem lies and the way to erase it.
Similarly, if a programmer writes a huge computer program like Windows XP, he has "created" it, if you will. But if there's a problem in the program, he might not know where it is and he'll have to keep sending you Windows Updates fixing the problems as he finds them.

He might have "created" the program, but he does not have full knowledge of its workings. However, Allah has created the heavens and the earth AND He knows everything about them. Not a leaf falls but He knows it.

Your computer always crashes, but Allah's creation keeps on going as planned, until Allah causes it to be destroyed intentionally.

Here the word "vicegerent" is used for "Khalifah". As we'll see below, there are other understandings of what is meant by "khalifah".
Quote:

GEM:if you are in an organization, if you don’t know anything, just admit it.
What the Gem means is that if you make a mistake as the leader of an organization, be honest and immediately acknowledge that you made a mistake. If you don't, it will result in resentment in your team as well as provide a bad role model of behavior (being dishonest or shifting the blame or ignoring problems).

Quote:

Everyone is a shepherd and will be asked about their flocks whether you like it or not.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Every one of you is a shepherd and everyone of you will be questioned about his flock.”
So everyone is a leader in one way or another. Therefore, the gem above applies to everyone. We all must learn about leadership and apply it in our role as a shepherd.

Quote:

The prostration of the angels was not one of worship. There are two types of prostration: 1) Prostration of respect, and 2) Prostration of worship.

The angles were commanded to prostrate out of respect to Adam because of his superiority. Another example of prostration in this manner is when the parents and brothers of Yusuf ('alaihi as-salaam) prostrated to him out of respect (as is described in the Qur'an).

However, in the Shariah of Prophet Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam), prostration of respect to the creation is forbidden so that we don't eventually fall into shirk (i.e. the habit of bowing to people may make it easy for us to fall into shirk). So we can't bow to our teacher in karate. Wa Allahu a'lam.

What was hidden was Iblis's hatred, anger, and jealousy of Adam and his arrogant disapproval of Allah honoring Adam.

He thinks he knows better than Allah. So he's giving himself the attribute of "Al-'Aleem" or "Al-Hakeem" and denying it for Allah. He even has his throne above water, which I think is like mimicking Allah's throne above water, trying to make himself out to be a god, wa Allahu a'lam. Such is the arrogance of Iblis (la'natu Allahi 'alaihi).

He was kaafir already (he kept it to himself), but he wasn't punished until he did the crime of disobedience. Similarly, we do not try to find out who the munafiqs are and punish them. They are kuffar, but it is in their hearts and not openly apparent.

How was Iblees a kaafir from before the disobience? His 'aqeedah was messed up because he thought Allah was making a mistake! Allah does not make mistakes!

Quote:
Iblees was jealous of Adam. Iblees hit the body of Adam when the soul had not been breathed into him.

walHamdulilLahi Rabbil 'alameen
