Ramadan Gift Baskets
As'salaamu Alaykum-
Lets make this Ramadan special,Insha Allah! This Ramadan lets take da'wah to a whole new level-our family will be making a gift basket for our neighbor and leasing office. It could be any type of basket, even one made by hand or from the dollar store. The idea is to stock it full of treats (chocolates, crackers, caramel corn)-it really doesn't matter, as long as you put in the da'wah material to top it off. Right now, Wal-Mart has a nice assortment of gift baskets and at a reasonable price, Ma sha Allah! What a nice way to connect with your neighbor and gain entrance into their home and heart-and what does it better than food(?). Your conversation can be as easy as mentioning the FIVE pillars of Islam-of course high-lighting the fasting aspect. Explain to them how much Ramadan means for us (charitable efforts, giving, and remembering those less fortunate). Repeat on EID! GO FOR THE GOAL-Prepare your Ramadan Gift Basket Next Week! ~Shahada

Every-Day Ideas
As'salaamu Alaykum,
May Allah reward your efforts, Ma sha Allah. For everyday tips on how to spark conversations with neighbors, Bro. Kammal El-Mekki taught us in his 'How to Give Shahada in 10 Minutes' class just be a good neighbor. For example- if you are on your way to the store, ask your neighbor if they need anything from the store. If you are cutting your lawn-ask your neighbor if they would like their lawn cut. Simple ways to build a relationship that way discussing Islam comes off easier. Kammal El-Mekki said this is a part of being a good Muslim any way. So when you offer your help and assistance in this way elaborate on how Islam orders you as a Muslim to do such kind acts. That way they are constantly aware that your main goal is to please Allah and to obey your religion. At the same time you build a relationship in-which making da'wah becomes easy on you-and it becomes ok with them. Also, invite them over for an Iftar and or Take over some food as soon as you cook it (not left over) from your iftar. A weekly gift is not necessary, but DAILY acts of kindness are easier and cheaper-while always making them aware of Islam. Barak Allaahu Feekum.

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
Know whats cool? Those cards that you're supposed to give non-Muslims on like Christmas that have ayahs of the Qur'an regarding Maryam (as) and Isa (as).
I like the gift-basket idea. We should give some on Eid too Inshallah.

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
wa 3laykum as salaam ukhti
Though I really like your idea, I wanted to share with you that today I saw a small video (here) on walmart and me and my husband decided not to shop there anymore. So if you have any other replacements for it (I know walmart has low prices but unfortunately it is at high high costs for others) please let me know. I do not usually shop for things like this so I am not sure where the best place to go is. Maybe Michaels or are they expensive? Also, we should keep in mind that giving da`wah should be to tawheed. So if we are going to tell them why Ramadhaan is special to us, make sure we incorporate la ilaha illa allaah. Anyways let me know of a walmart replacement and may Allaah Subhaanahu wa ta`alaa reward you for your efforts, aameen

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
Bismillah
Asalamu alaykum, Umm-Layth or anyone else, please give an example or examples of incorporating tawheed into the dawah when talking about Ramadan. Sometimes when talking to the news, they really want to know about the fast, you know, so it can be difficult because they print so little or it does not feel like sit-down-and-talk-time and they just want to know what the fast experience is like and how you prepare. I guess that is when they control what they want to ask. Or you may forget to talk about tawheed when giving them what they ask. When you write yourself or initiate or have a free conversation, I guess that is different and getting into tawheed is real straight foward: In Islam we believe that there is no diety or anything worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partners or associates. So that being the case we worship Him according to what was told us to do, for our own benefit and to fulfill our purpose in life which is to worship Him alone, without partners or associates. Fasting in Ramadan is one of those things He told us to do.. (and then you can go on and on if you want to explain more)... * please correct this or give other approaches if I am not doing this right |

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
wa 3laykum as salaamu wa ra7matullaahi wa barakaatuhu
Okay. I get asked a question like the following a lot: "Why do Muslims fast in Ramadhaan? We can say, Muslims fast in Ramadhaan because to be Muslim means that you submit to the commands of God Almighty who has made obligatory on those who are able, to fast from sunrise until sunset so that they can show their level of faith in God through obedience. And then from there it would go on. Other times I get asked, "What is the purpose of fasting?" And I say for example, Well, Ramadhaan is a time to humble ourselves as humans, better our character, increase in charity and learn to be thankful for the many blessings that we have. All of this is a test for humans that God, the All-Wise gives us to make us better people, as individuals and as a community. I think it would be really easy to make a mention of it. I have seen many times the whole point is to explain why we cover, why we fast, why we give zakah and to the kuffar it just seems like some ritual that we have made up. If we make mention that we do it because God Almighty has commanded it, then they can stop there or ask more questions. I have many times given this answer and immediately been asked, "And you mean God as in who?" and it leads me to tell them that I am referring to the Creator of the heavens and the earth, not a human, not a statue but God who is Perfect. It is usually after that, that they want to know more about Ramadhaan because now to them it seems like something that is more than a ritual or cultural thing.

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
That's true but still it should be the focus when giving da`wah.

Re: Ramadan Gift Baskets
Gift baskets are awesome. We did this at Concordia University at the begining of Ramadan and delivered to all student clubs, admin and student union. People were genuinely very happy and it started a great dawah wave at the university. People started knowing Muslims as those who give... props to taking the idea to a different level. We just moved into a new neighborhood and I am using this inshaAllah
