Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

The block that the Shia prostrate on - they believe they are prostrating on the soil of Karbala which is somehow blessed by the blood of Hassan (ra)

If you are leading prayer recite a short surah, if you are praying by yourself recite as long as you want

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

One thing I realized was: maybe our present time period isn't that bad.

After hearing the example that the Sheikh mentioned about the type of questions that would be asked during the taqleed eras (specifically if it was permissible for a Hanafi man to marry a Shafi'i woman) and their answers (yes, it is permissible, by Qiyaas of the case of marrying a woman from the People of the Book), I was in a bit of shock.

Obviously every time period had its own test and fitan, but I was surprised to learn that division had occurred to that extent!

What I found even more surprising (and simply relieving) was how we have actually moved forward since then. Yes, there are still a lot of people who follow their madhab by the book, especially in other countries, but (I think) the average person would probably not go to the extent of performing Qiyaas in the manner mentioned above.

I've always had this idea that the Muslim Ummah was becoming more and more divided every day, but in some ways, I think we have become more united. And that made me really happy alhamdulillah

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

Seems obvious, but, after observing how Fiqh changed overtime, I am more assured that: what goes up, must come down...

And inshaAllah what comes down will eventually make its way up.

Even though the latter makes no sense from a physical perspective!

Imam Malik had an excellent memory, he would not take notes in class and he would tie a knot for each hadith he heard and then when he went home he would write them down from memory.

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

When Imam Malik went to give halaqa he would shower, perfume, and dress in his best, but when he was called to give his opinion on a matter he would go casually.

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

The formula for writing a book was given to Imam Malik:
1) Avoid the concessions of Ibn Abbas (ru)
2) Avoid the strictness of Umar (ru)
3) Avoid the oddness of Masud (ru)

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

It took Imam Malik 40 years to write his book

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

I also loved how we went through names of scholars from every era... It put a lot of things in perspective, from simply knowing which person existed in which time period and their orders, to realizing why certain scholars may have had certain tendencies in their books.

Re: Ittihaad's TCE Gems

Most of Islam was spread by merchants not by the sword
