This is the first time I've ever seen tazkiyyatun-nafs taught through tajweed classes - awesome mashaaAllah.

Ibn Taymiyyah was the intellectual tank and Ibn Al Qayyim was the spiritual one.

Ibn Qayyim’s akhlaq: Ibn Rajab said: He was very famous for his ibaadah, his level of worship, and tahajjud.

[Umm Ikhlaas]

Ibn Al Qayyim brings the story of the woman who stole during the time of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam). The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered her hand to be chopped. People became offended because of her status, but eventually the punishment was carried out. Her tawbah became very sincere and could be seen in her actions. From this hadeeth, Ibn Al Qayyim developed the understanding that out of love, Allah will cause an individual to fall into sin to force them into tawbah. The sin is a mercy even though when looked at from the outside it is a sin and dangerous, but there is something hidden in it for that person.

For Ibn Al Qayyim, the true meaning of tawheed is realizing your excessive and extreme need for Allah (subhanahu wata'ala).

He says that those who want to reach the high level of love of Allah, then they need to put themselves in the need of Allah by choice in all of their affairs even if they are rich in material life.

Some Words of Advice for the Seeker of Knowledge
(notes from the opening session by Shaykh Yaser Birjas ----- IlmSummit 09).

1.

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]لا يستطاع العلم براحة الجسم[/font]

Knowledge is not attained whilst the body is rested, there will be physical hardship.

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]السلف كانوا يصبرون على الجوع لطلب العلم[/font]

Avoid excessive eating: The salaf used to withstand hunger for the sake of seeking knowledge. But when they attained the knowledge and the time came to teach and pass it on, they ate and would not stay hungry.

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]مراجعة العلم [/font]

Reviewing knowledge: knowledge should be reviewed consistently.

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]تعلمو الحلم قبل العلم[/font]

Learn forbearance and patience before the knowledge.

5. Exercise: the student of knowledge should be sure to set aside time for exercise, this is very important.

6.

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]رفيق الطلب: يكون صاحب استقامة و تفاهم[/font]

A student of knowledge should have a study companion with them on the path of seeking knowledge. This companion should carry the characteristics of istiqamah (righteousness, uprightness) and understanding.

Study Companions to Avoid:
- the lazy ([font=Arial', 'sans-serif]الكسلان[/font] )
- the time killer (talkative) [font=Arial', 'sans-serif]المعطل[/font]
- the troublemaker or corrupt one [font=Arial', 'sans-serif]المفسد [/font]

Ali radhiAllahu anhu said,

[font=Arial', 'sans-serif]إنما يجلس الرجل إلى من ينفعه في دينه[/font]

"The man sits with the one who benefits him in his Religion"
