Ideas for Deeds to do in the First 10 Days of Thul Hijjah

Salaam alaikum everyone,

I was looking for something to contribute and felt this might be the most timely and beneficial thing I could do at the moment. I hope I have not misplaced it but I am sure Noor will help me if I have.

As you all know, we are already well into the first 10 days of Thul Hijjah, days which the prophet (saas) said are the best days of the year - comparable in their excellence to the last 10 NIGHTS of Ramadan. Yet, whereas many take advantage of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, these 10 days are often neglected in our times as people lose them due to work obligations and school studies, etc.

With that in mind, I was thinking of easy actions that a person could do - even if they have to work or attend class - so that they don't miss out on the benefit of these excellent days. Masah'Allah many of you out there have some wonderful ideas and gems from classes you have attended that you can contribute to this thread so that those who read it can benefit and insha'Allah come away from these momentous days with a great reward bi ithnillah.

I would like to contribute two things from our discussions at Sacred Scrolls last weekend in Memphis (Qabeelat Mubeen): learning some of the morning and evening remembrances (thikr) and secondly learning some of the virtues of portions of the Quran. If we combine these two with the INTENTION to earn the reward from Allah as well as to continue them for the rest of our lives, this alone will give us a great deal of good.

As for the remembrances of the night and morning, the night is defined as the period immediately after 'Asr until sunset (best but can still be made into the middle of the night if delayed) and the morning as the period immediately after Fajr until sunrise (all this is evidenced from Quran 50:39 and elsewhere).

Among the authentic and easier du'a’s which the Prophet (saas) taught us to say in the morning and evening are as follows:

Sayyid al-Istighfaar (The Master of Forgiveness - the best way of asking for forgiveness), which is:

Allahumma Anta Rabbee laa ilaah illa Anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wad’ika maa asta’tu, a’oodhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu aboo’u laka bi ni’matika ‘alayya wa aboo’u laka bi dhanbi, faghfir li fa innahu laa yaghfir al-dhunoob illa anta

(O Allah, you are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise (to You) as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You.).”

He [the Prophet (saas)] said: Whoever says this during the day, believing in it with certainty, then dies on that day before evening comes, will be one of the people of Paradise, and whoever says it at night, believing in it with certainty, then dies on that night before morning comes, will be one of the people of Paradise.” (Bukhari)

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (saas) said: ‘Whoever says morning and evening,

Subhaan Allah wa bihamdihi (Glory and praise be to Allah)’ one hundred times, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better than him, except for one who said the same as he said, or who said more.’(Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah (saas) said: “If a person says three times, every day in the morning and every night in the evening,

(In the name of Allah by Whose name nothing can cause harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing)’, nothing will harm him.” (Hasan - Tirmithi)

Rashid came once to Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibnal 'Aas and said to him, “Narrate to me something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (saas), so he showed me his Saheefah (his written record of ahadith) and said, “This is what the Messenger of Allah (saas) dictated to me”. So I looked and found that Abu Bakr as-Siddiq had asked the Messenger of Allah (saas), “teach me what I should say in the morning and in the evening?”, and he replied, “O' Abu Bakr say:

“Allahumma faatir al-samawaati wa’l-ard ‘aalim al-ghaybi wa’l-shahaadah, laa ilaaha ill anta, Rabba kulli shay’in wa maleekahu, a’oothu bika min sharri nafsi wa min sharri’l-shaytaan wa sharakihi, wa an aqtarifa 'alaa nafsee soo'a aw ajurahu ilaa muslim.”

(O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, knower of the unseen and the seen, there is none has the right to be worshipped except You, Lord and sovereign of all things. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self and from the evil of the Shaytaan and his tricks (or associates) or that I bring upon my own self evil or cause it to another Muslim.).” (Saheeh - Tirmithi)

Similarly he (saas) used to say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ

‘Allahumma inni a’oothu bika min al-kufri wa’l-faqri. Allahumma inni a’oothu bika min ‘adhaab al-qabr. Laa ilaaha illa anta

(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave. None has the right to be worshipped except You).’ Repeat this three times in the morning and three times in the evening” (Hasan - Abu Dawood)

These are just a few of the authentic remembrances but ones that are easy enough to quickly incorporate into your busy schedule insha'Allah. If there is interest than tomorrow I will post some of the virtues of different parts of the Qur'an that might encourage us to use these days to increase our recitation - and implementation - of the Qur'an. Was-salaam alaikum

Re: Ideas for Deeds to do in the First 10 Days of Thul Hijjah

Another idea that I would encourage is to visit your parents if they are near-by and to call them if they are far. Indeed the Prophet (saas) said, "May he be disgraced! May he be disgraced! May he be disgraced, he whose parents, one or both, attain old age during his life-time, and he does not enter Jannah (by being dutiful to them)". [Muslim] Furthermore, he (saas) said, "He who desires ample provisions and that his life be prolonged (or blessed), should maintain good ties with his blood relations". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. And there is none of the blood relations who has more right upon us than our mother and then our father. Yet how many of us become too busy with the material world and forget our parents causing them sadness until they pass away and it is too late for us. Please don't be from this group and take advantage of being good to them now.

Re: Ideas for Deeds to do in the First 10 Days of Thul Hijjah

Bismillah,
Masha'Allah; such a beneficial and well needed thread- Jazakallah Khair Dr.Ali
I think something which has not been mentioned yet (and excuse me if it has) is to engage yourself in dua; that is your own personal ones alongside the general ones- doing Istighfaar etc. Especially on the day of Arafat!
I think we should be definitely making the most of it during these blessed days; Insha'Allah
May Allah help us in utisiling out time efficienlty. Ameen

Re: Ideas for Deeds to do in the First 10 Days of Thul Hijjah

Salaam alaikum everyone

Masha'Allah, lots of good ideas. I wanted to quickly post some of the virtues of various surahs so that people can get the benefit of that as well insha'Allah:

Here is a brief collection concerning some of what has been authentically narrated on the excellence of some Qur'anic Surahs:

Surat al-Fatiha #1

It came down from the Heavens with an Angel who told the Prophet (saas) that he was being given two lights which no other Prophet before him had been given – surat al-Fatiha and the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah. [Sahih - Nasaa'i]

Once the Prophet (saas) was traveling when he disembarked and began walking alongside a companion. He asked him, “Shouldn't I tell you the best part of the Quran?” then he recited 'Alhamdu lilahi rabil alameen' (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds). [Sahih - Albani]

The Prophet (saas)said, 'The mother of the Quran are the seven oft repeated verses (al-Fatiha)”. [Bukhari]

A group of the Companions of the Prophet (saas) set out on a journey and traveled until they made camp near one of the Arab tribes. They asked them for hospitality but they refused to do so. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, and they tried everything but nothing helped him. Then some of them said, 'Why don’t you go to those people who are staying (nearby)? Maybe some of them have something.' So they went to them and said, 'O people, our leader has been stung and we have tried everything and nothing helped him. Do any of you have something?' One of them said, Yes, by Allah. I will perform ruqyah for him, but by Allah we asked you for hospitality and you did not give us anything, so we will not perform ruqyah for you unless you give us something in return. So they agreed on a flock of sheep, then he started to blow on him and recite Al-hamdu Lillaahi Rabb il-‘Aalameen. Then he recovered quickly from his complaint and started walking, and there was nothing wrong with him. Then they gave them what they had agreed to, and some of them (the Companions) said, 'Let us share it out'. The one who had performed ruqyah said, 'Do not do anything until we come to the Prophet (saas) and tell him what happened, and we will wait and see what he tells us to do'. So they came to the Messenger of Allah (saas) and told him what had happened. He said, “How did you know that it is a ruqyah?” Then he said, “You did the right thing. Share them out, and give me a share.” And the Messenger of Allah (saas) smiled. [Bukhari and Muslim]

The virtues of this beautiful and simple surah are many more than what will be mentioned here.

Surat al-Baqara #2

The Prophet (saas) said, “The Quran and its people (those who understood and acting upon what they read) will be presented on the day of Judgment, preceded by Surah al-Baqara and Surah aal-Imran.”

[Muslim]

The Prophet (saas) said, “Learn Surat al-Baqara for there is a blessing in it, and there is sorrow for abandoning it, and it is unbearable for the idle' and that 'al-Baqara and aal-Imran are like two flowers which will shade their companion (who reads, understands and acts upon them) on the day of Judgment, as if there were two large clouds or two flocks of birds”. [Muslim]

The Prophet (saas) said, “Do not make your house as graves, for Satan avoids a dwelling wherein Surat al-Baqara is recited” [Muslim]

The Prophet (saas) said, “Whoever recited the Verse of the Throne at the end of each obligatory prayer, nothing could prevent him from going to paradise except death”. [Sahih al-Jaami']

It was narrated from Abu Mas’ood al-Ansaari that the Prophet (saas) said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Ibn al-Qayyim said: They will suffice him against any evil that may harm him.

Surah al Kahf #18

The Prophet (saas) said, “Whoever recited Surah al-Kahf on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday) it will serve for him as a light (on the Day of Judgment) from his place to Mecca”. [Sahih al-Jaami']

The Prophet (saas) said, “Whoever recited Surah al Kahf on a Friday, Allah will kindle for him abundant light to illuminate the period between the two Fridays (the Friday on which the recitation was made and the next Friday)” [Sahih Al-Jaami]

Bara' ibn 'Azib said, “While a man was reciting surah al-Kahf, he saw his riding animal kicking. When he looked up he saw something like a cloud, and so the man came and narrated the story to the Prophet (saas) who said, that it was tranquility and it came down with the Quran”. [Sahih - Tirmithi]

Surat al-Anbiya #21

The Messenger of Allaah (saas) said: “The call of Dhu’l-Noon [Yunus/Jonah], which he recited when he was in the belly of the whale, ‘La ilaaha illa anta subhaanaka innee kuntu min al-THaalimeen.(There is nothing worthy of worship except you, Glorified are You above all that they attribute to You, indeed I have been among those who oppress themselves) There is no Muslim who recites this in any situation, but Allah will respond to him.” [Sahih - Tirmithi]

The Prophet (saas) said: “Shall I not tell you of something which, if some of the misery and distress of this world befalls a man and he recites it, he will be relieved of his stress. It is the du’aa’ of Dhu’l-Noon: ‘La ilaaha illa anta subhaanaka innee kuntu min al-zaalimeen.’” [Sahih - Haakim]

Surat as-Sajdah #32

The Prophet (saas) would not sleep until he recited Surah as-Sajdah. [Sahih - Tirmithi]

Surat al-Fath #48

The Prophet (saas) said, “A Surah of the Quran was revealed to me tonight, indeed it is the dearest Surah to my heart, more than anything under the sun”. Then the Prophet (saas) then recited Surat al-Fath (48) verses 1-5. [Bukhari]

Surat ar-Rahman #55

The Prophet (saas) went to the companions and recited Surat ar-Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the jinn and recited it to them, and they were responsive. And when he would recite the verses 'And which of the favors of the Lord will you deny' the jinn would respond

'There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praise is due to You'. [Hasan - Tirmithi]

Surat al-Mulk #67

The Prophet (saas) said, “There is a surah in the Quran which is only thirty verses. It defended whoever recited it , until it secured him into paradise', then he recited 'Blessed be He in Whose hands is Dominion'” (Surat al-Mulk). And in another narration, “until he was forgiven”. [Sahih al-Jaami']

The Prophet (saas)said, “Surat al-Mulk is the protector from the punishment and torment of the grave”

[Sahih al-Jaami' & Nasaa'i]

It is authentically recorded from Jabir that the Prophet (saas) did not sleep until he had recited this surah and al-Sajdah (32). [Tirmithi]

Surat al-Kafiroon #109

The Prophet (saas) said, “Recite surat al-Kafiroon and then go to sleep after coming to its end, for it is a clearance from shirk (associating partners with Allah).” [Sahih - Abu Dawood]

The Prophet (saas) said, “Whoever recited Surat al-Kafiroon would get a reward as if reading a quarter of the Quran. Whoever recited Surat al-Ikhlas would get a reward as if reading one third of the Quran”. [Hasan - Tirmithi]

Surat al-Ikhlas #112

A man said to the Prophet, “I really love this surah”. The Prophet (saas) replied, “And your love for it will enable you to enter paradise” [Sahih - Tirmithi]

The Prophet (saas) said, “By Him in Whose hand my soul is, it is equal to one third of the Quran!” [Bukhari]

The Prophet (saas) said: “Whoever recites Qul huwa Allahu ahad ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” [Sahih al-Jaami’]

Surat al-Falaq #113 and an-Naas #114

It was narrated from ‘A’isha that when the Prophet (saas) went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad (112), Qul a’oothu bi rabb il-falaq (113) and Qul a’oothu bi rabb il-naas (114). Then he would wipe his hands over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. [Bukhari]

Note: Due to many people asking and due to the number of innovations associated with it, a special note will be made regarding the virtue of Surat Ya-Seen. There are a number of ahadith which speak of its virtues, most of which unfortunately are however false and fabricated, and some of which are slightly weak (da’eef). We have not found any sahih ahadith which speak specifically of the virtues of Surat Ya-Seen. No doubt though, it is a surah of the Qur'an, and one that contains great reflections and reminders of tawheed. It still carries the reward that for every letter recited there will be ten rewards, but it carries no other special virtue similar to those that have been authentically narrated above.

May Allah help us all to achieve His mercy and His pleasure and reward us abundantly for our efforts and guide us to that which will help us to achieve success in this world and the Hereafter – ameen.

Question about the above. Is there a narration that mentions that he (saw) spit on his hands and then rubbed it over his body as well? Or did he (saw) just blow into them?
