Hanbali opinion on neglecting Salah due to laziness

As Salaamu Alykum,

In our class, Shykh Yaser Birjas mentioned that the Hanbali school opinion on a person neglecting Salah out of laziness is that he is a Kafir. But, the Shykh also mentioned that the actual opinion of Ahmad ibn Hanbal himself was that the person is a still a Muslim, but a Fasiq. My question is, which scholars within the Hanbali school came to the conclusion of the person being a Kafir, and how did this opinion become the majority within the Hanbali school, to the point that now it's considered to be the official opinion of the Madhab?

Re: Hanbali opinion on neglecting Salah due to laziness

Assalamu Alaikum.

I thought Imam Ahmad's position was that such a person is a Kafir. Refer to Islam QA: Fatwa #5208.

Perhaps the Sheikh's points were misunderstood?

Also, Imam Ahmad was among the scholars who believed that a person abandoning the Salah completely due to laziness should be killed, acting as further proof that he believed such a person is indeed a Kafir.

Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah said in his book, Salah and the ruling on the one who leaves it:

“The Muslims do not disagree that abandoning the Salah, which is compulsory, is one of the greatest sins. And the sin of one who leaves the Salah with Allah, his sin is worse than killing a soul, and taking the money of the people, and even worse than the sin of Zina, and stealing, and taking intoxicants. And the one who does that has exposed himself to the Punishment of Allah, and His Anger, and His Humiliation for him in this life and the afterlife.

“They differ (regarding the issue of punishment) after agreeing Salah is one of the major sins. The scholars differed regarding the punishment and whether he is a believer or not. Sufyan Ibn Thawri, Abdullah Ibn Al-Awza’i, Abdullah Ibn Mubarak, Hammad Ibn Zayd, Malik Ibn Anas, Ahmad Ibn Hambal, Muhammad Ibn Ash-Shaf’i, Ishaq Ibn Rahawayh and their followers are of the position that one who abandoned Salah should be killed. They only differed on how the punishment should be done . . .”

And Allah knows best.

Wassalamu Alaikum.

Look at how Imam Ibn Majah started his Sunan; he has shown great respect to the commands of the Prophet (peace be upon him) . . .
