Should one wear niqab if family opposes it

Can/should one wear niqab if one's family (non-Muslim..and 'non-practising' Muslim) would be really against it and cause upset?

I don't think it's obligatory but obviously highly virtuous

I would personally advise against this, as a niqabi, because in my opinion it is more important to work on the fardh (obeying/pleasing your family) than something that is recommended.

Many sisters are in this predicament, and I always say: don't ruin your relationship with your family/parents over a small piece of cloth. I worked on convincing my parents for a few months before I was allowed to start wearing it, nearly 4 yrs ago walhamdulillah. My father was really against it, and now mashaAllah he loves it. Also understand that they may feel this way because they are scared for you/your safety.

I have a few convert friends who wear niqab to almaghrib classes or to the masjid, but when they get home, they take it off because their families don't like it, or they don't want to alarm them. This is also something you can do if you are comfortable with it since you take the opinion that it is recommended.

Make duaa to Allah that He guides their hearts and that He makes it easy for you if it is good for you.
