Studying one Scholar???

To Sheikh Yasir Specifically:

I had a question regarding studying a Madhhab. I recall from the EOF class, you had mentioned that you first started to study the Shaafi' Madhhab and later on when you were in Bosnia you were starting to study the Hanafi Madhhab.

Some Questions I had:

1)If I was to study one Madhhab do I adhere to the rulings of that Madhhab, that I am studying or is just to get an understanding of them?

2)When I choose a particular scholar what do I do next, as I know most of their books are in arabic, and I not knowing arabic, where would I goto?

3)What are the steps and areas I should take and goto when doing this?

4)Can you give me some advise from your expereinces in studying this area.

1) It is best that when you undertake learning fiqh you learn one madhab keep it simple and you memorize all the rulings according to that, not just reading for pleasure but to memorize it along with atleast an evidence or two for each and become firm in that. Ofcourse after that you can adopt another opinion if it is stronger or the evidence is more convincing or if you learn it in such a manner from another scholar you study under. You can do this by studying any matn or classical text of fiqh of a madhab or so on.

2) Learning arabic would solve it though I am still learning and am not fluent yet, but you can find some things in english. Allahu Alim I don't know much that would go deep into things in English because usually only normal islamic books are translated but they expect if you are to study deep into islam any such person would learn arabic and tehn just read in arabic, this is the language of our deen

3) Memorize Quran, Learn Arabic, Learn and study from one classical book the rulings and be set in them, then learn as much of the evidences theyve used for each one, mean while studying usoolul fiqh. From their you can expand your bases in reading Comparative fiqh and so on. Allahu Alim

4) I have just started like you but most of what I have said above is advice i have gotten and that given to me by Sheikh Yaser over kabobs after TCE class. Best advice is to memorize every fatawa of a certain reliable scholar or to study one book of fiqh that is comprehensive and to stick to generally one school of thought till you have it very well known (ie. dont read half on hanafi fiqh then start studying majmoo fatawa of ibn taymiyyah and then start reading al-Umm by Ash-Shafi'ii)
