A student, may Allah reward them, had the following questions and I thought, in sha Allah, the answer would benefit more if I posted it here:

Answer: One of the common misconceptions about this class is that it is a FIQH class. It's not actually. This is AlMaghrib's Fiqh class: The Purification Act, taught by Shaykh AbdulBary.
The key word in Usool AlFiqh is USOOL. The principles of, ABC's, alphabet, elements, fundaments, rudiments, structure, stratification, structure, syntax ... of how Fiqh exists. If you've ever found yourself debating Fiqh issues (like can we eat from McDonalds or should we follow ISNA regarding the moon sighting), then you've used Usool AlFiqh to do the debate. However, most people have never heard of a science of USOOL, so naturally their Fiqh discussions are filled with premature content. Usool AlFiqh is not about Madhhabs at all. It's about: where does Islamic law come from? How do i KNOW that Allah likes something or dislikes something else. It's a super duper trooper powerful subject and super essential for every Muslim to get an appreciation for. This topic of Usool AlFiqh is the breakfast of scholars. I've been criticized for attempting to teach it to 'lay' people. The fear is that I'll make people too confident, make them think that they can run out and give fatwa. On the contrary, I truly honestly if someone didnt' study Usool and still feels confident to speak Fiqh, they are just deluding themselves. In sha Allah, in this seminar, the students will get a deep deep understanding of the techniques scholars use when doing ijtihad and one's love and appreciation for them will skyrocket! In sha Allah. wAllahu 'alam. PS: in other words, no we will not be teaching Salah in this class. Nor will we be discussing Fiqh diffferences amongst different madhdhabs. |

Re: Is it Fiqh or USOOL alFiqh?
Will you discuss the differences in Usool among the madhabs?

Re: Is it Fiqh or USOOL alFiqh?
Usool ul-Fiqh was the best class I ever attended. It has helped me understand all the fiqh classes so much better.

I remember the Ustadh mentioning that Usul ul fiqh is 'behind the scenes of fiqh'. |

The differences in Usool come up more in Usool AlFiqh part 2. This Usool class talks more about the agreed upon stuff and what the science is all about. |

Re: Is it Fiqh or USOOL alFiqh?
Since we're talking about Usool i have two questions
1) What is "Usool Al Maqarin" in Fiqh Al Maqarin? Someone was telling me that by saying "The strongest opinion" the scholar was using the Usool of Maqarin. 2) Usool Al Madhab is what we studied in Code Evolved right? Like how Abu Hanifa uses Hypothetical problems but doesn't use Malik's Usool of Practice of the people of Madinah. |

Usool Alfiqh is especially tricky and especially not recommended to just 'share notes' as opposed to a class like Fiqh AdDa'wah where the concepts are more easily grasped. So, i wouldn't recommend that you just swap notes with people. Instead, perhaps try starting conversations and try to get examples for things that you are learning. In sha Allah, from this weekend on, there will be a lot more discussion in this folder. |
